Range Rover, P38a Swap, 4bd1t/M5od/fordtcase - Page 2

Hi, this is my thread in a 4cyl. Diesel swap forum. Thought that it might be appreciated here aswell.

I do have some questions for all your professionals here on Landyzone!

Yes I have searched your forum and read most related articles.

1. Best to iether trick ecu. (hook up vital sensors, crank position temp, etc. and put resistors in place of unneeded sensors) to maintain regular becm operation
Or
worst case scenario, rewire the whole BECM out of the vehicle and live without abs etc.

Anyways. Tell me what you all think. I think this online community will have some really good input. I thank you in advance for your help.

There probably are,but most folk on here have enough problems keeping the original rubbish going - let alone complicating matters further.
Whilst I have nothing against that Isuzu unit, what is really needed is a smooth six,I say this with experience - I've done alot of work on P38's fitted with the 2.8 Mitsi engine and also the Mazda SL35t unit. Both are too tractor like for a Range Rover, both had ongoing issues to do with the install.
Getting a different engine to work in either a diesel or petrol based P38 is not as hard as people think,I helped out with making an LS1 Chev mouse working in a P38,its just quite alot of work.

Thanks, ya I can see there are allot of faults coming up that people need help to deal with.

Fortunately somebody has already replaced the EAS air shock system. Replaced with coil springs. Looks to have been some kind of kit.

Kind of wanted to have that feature because of the extra weight thats going to go up front,

How did you get the electrical sorted out when you did the Chev motor swap?

You mean unfortunately:rolleyes: the airsprings would cope with the extra weight and the height would remain the same:p No messing with calcs to get the spring rate right for the weight, air springs self adjust:p:p:p

but there spring rate chasnges though...thus altering ride quality.

and dont put that engine in!!!wrong...please consider nissan or toyota 6 pot 4.2l..so much nicer and better suited..****e loads of work to get that nasty 4 pot in and running with becm,so might as well put a good engine in...

I wasnt involved in the actual nuts and bolts of the conversion - I just gave advice about which sensors needed to be used and located etc.
I have to say I agree with Zen,a 6cyl 4.2 Landcruiser engine would be a much better bet if you are going to attempt an engine conversion. It got enough poke, but is smooth with it.

..

Of course the spring rate changes, just as it needs to to cope with the extra weight, and just as you would need heavier coils to cope with heavier weight. You would also need to re rate the shocks to give adequate damping with the extra weight.

that was the bit i was commenting on..i know you know, but it ain't as straight forward as that..yes the air springs and ecu will compansate for extra weight , but doing so will alter spring rate of air bag..ie more air pressure for same height, thus harder spring...

for the record..air suspension rocks!!i would not have retro fitted to me 2 door if i didn't think so..

ah..i see..you all aussies and kee wees...now i understand....still a bad move though..just go and buy a toyota..no more dramas then!
