i could do with a little diagnostic help here laydees n gents

me mate has just foned me with a bit of a problem

all of a sudden the battery warning light came on on his disco so he drove straight home when he got there his headlights were dimmer than usual

over the last 2/3 days its been slightly harder to start seeming like a sluggish battery but it has been damn cold and the age /history of said battery is unknown

when he put it on the charger it said the battery was full even though 2 minutes previous it wouldnt even turn the starter motor or anything even the heater fan was non existant

the alternator seems fine belt running it fine no whirring noises fairly new (2 yr old genuine part ) all leads wires and earths seem fine and dandy althoug neither of us have a volt meter to check the output

am i right with the battery is shagged diagnosis or is it both the battery and alternator gone at the same time

any other possibilities or ideas are more than welcome as i need him and his disco to tow me series back frrom wales on saturday

please help ????:(:(:(:(

Tbh - the first job is to check the output of the alternator, until you do that its really hard to diagnose - try & borrow or buy a multimeter - sounds like alternator or dead cell in battery to me.
Have you tried swapping the battery with one you know is good ? this is where i would start if it kills that one then its pretty much gotta be alternator
hope this helps good luck !

at the moment the vehicle and me mate are in norden and im at the opposite side of manchester from him ive told him to get a fresh battery as id advised him 2 weeks ago as i didnt like the looks of it when i did the pre mot work 2 weeks ago ( terminals white blue gak and corroded something wicked

ill fone him again later to see how its doing all im guessing is if he changes the battery and the warning light stays on its gotta be the alternator thats at fault

reet cheers fellas

new battery fitted with a 4 yr guarrantee starts n runs perfect and no battery warning lights

checked alternator output wich gives a steady 14.35 volts

cheers fer convinceing me im right :D:D:D:D:praise::praise::praise:

Welcome, but a disco 1 is a disco 1, mark 2 my arse :p:p:D:D

well i dunt know do i im not exactly up on the disco whatever it is mark n parcel thing all i know is its an R reg disco with a factory standard 300tdi in it on an lt77 box with the factory roof bars /bonded windscreen / and the large headlights i guess it could be called post facelift

i only know how they run not the history of the fekkers theyre too modern n too much plastic in the interior fer a rough arse ex farmboy like me

i dont kike the disco enough to own one personally but i do like the way they run for some reason and besides ive welded far too many of them to want one of my own

im by no means slagging them off im just not a disco man and it shows with my lack of knowledge with what mark they are and what engine it should have

i just need a little backup now and then with me diagnostics and fault finding just to make damn sure i got it right ( would you rather your mechanic be 100% sure he knows whats wrong and what it needs first time or chance it and take a gamble with your money based on a 50/50 hunch to find its something else costing more money )

with people round here i have a verry good reputation for the way i work and the quality of my work against the price of my work as most of my customers rely on their cars/vans and landys to put bread on their tables to feed their kids same as i rely on mine

i hope nobody takes offense in what ive just written as i meant no harm nor malice in the way i explain things i just come across that way to some peeps (its just the way i was brought/dragged up ):D:D:D

once again i thank you all for your spot on responses and help i hope one day i can return the favour ;););):)

naah mate i dont get wound up specialy as im on the prozac anyway i just thought to save any confrontation /fallouts and misunderstanding id explain me thinking fully right off the bat

as im in a new to me part of landyzone asking questions about a ( modern proppa landy ) that isnt mine i just thought id allow peeps to know what im really like

sort of re introducing meself to a different caliabre of landy owners :cool::cool::cool:

Lol thier not that new the disco has about 23 years under its belt

thats not me point a car in my book is modern if theyre still making some kind of variant of it ie they dont make series anymore so theyre not modern but discos they are

and besides can you imagine a series landy comeing off the production line nowadays with lecci windows heated seats 2 sunroofs central locking airbags girly power steering button self activating headlights and wipers satnav and mp3 player with bluetooth full leatherette interior and shagpile carpets i just cant but would be interesting to see :D:D:D:D:D:D:D

I have to disagree the defender is the new series its just evolved the disco 200tdi is a far cry from a mk4 discovery nothing like it in fact not a single part is the same apart from the oval in my view a 23 year disco is not modren motor lol thats like saying a mk3 transit is a modren van its just not lol but i kinda get what you mean your talking classics

innit mate like the 1960s mini was all metal even the bumpers wich evolved over the years with bitsa plakki sprouting up here and there then it evolved into the metro so they could encorporate more cheap n nasty plakki now BMW have got the mini brand and its just not a mini anymore its just another plastic hatchback with a few of the original quirks

its just not a mini anymore and it never will be

same with trannys all metal fookin bomb proof and now look at em front wheel drive plastic engines with plastic front crossmembers slam pannels ok theyre quick nowadays but the engines are **** gimmie a mk 1 or mk2 with a 2ltr v4 engine anyday id give anything to have me old white mk 2 tranny back but like the rest its gone with the test of time due to the loss of the 25 yr rolling tax exemption :rolleyes:

I agree but the metro never replaced to mini infact metro production stop years before the original mini stopped i agree the bmw is not a mini but the first one didnt really change in fifty years they even kept the same engines for many many years just got inproved a bit over the years

i just dont and cant understand for the fekkin life in me why on earth they started making cylinder heads out of cast aluminium and magnesium gimmie a bombproof cast fekkin iron head anyday ok they weigh a tonne but no reskims due to warping the first time it boils up

****ty carbon composite head gaskets id rather see a pressed brass or copper gasket ok they cost a fortune but you knew with those they aint gonna fail specialy with the massive tempered bolts holding the head down not the ****ty stretch torque 8mm crap we got nowadays

we should be advanceing with engines not makeing them worse and crappier just to lose a few pounds against the power to weight bollox theyre aiming at :cool::cool::cool:

Its cheaper to make new stuff as long as it gets past the warrenty the maker dont give a fook i mean how easy was a old transit, mini,or any old car to work on, saying that the 300tdi is a really simple easy to work on ,time up ,change head on ,maintain compared to other derv,s of the same age ie any jap motor of the age was a pain in the ass the m51 in the bmw and range rover was a great motor (in the bmw anyway)but **** me its not simple speacial toOl for this that and the next thing
