Had a spare few moments today so decided to see why my clock doesn't work, it's never worked since I got the disco, it's completely black like their is no power to it.

So I removed the clock and was surprised to see that the power connector wasn't connected and the bulb, bulb holder and wire were missing. I reconnected the power plug and the clock worked but obviously it's dim and hard to read without the bulb in.

I routed around behind the dash but can't find the cable for the bulb/holder anywhere. I've an after market CD/radio and I'm wondering if the cable has been nicked for that as I'm guessing it's a switched live.

Trouble is I don't know what I'm looking for, could someone please tell me if the cable just a single cable and if so what colour? I'm assuming there is a plastic bulb holder of sorts on the end of the cable?

Funny thing is I've not been bothered about having no clock for ages, after all there's loads more serious jobs need doing, but now I've started I can't rest until I get to the bottom of the mystery of the missing cable....

This might help

All the time with the ignition on and dims a bit when the the lights are on.
u will be looking for a 3 wire cable light green is the switch supply, purple brown is the permanant supply, and red brown is from the lighting circuit.

Mine was the same on my Disco2, so bought one from a breaker, when I put it in, it worked but no light, replaced the bulb and presto one working clock, There was no seperate wire for the light it was in the four wire plug, the bulb holder picks up its power from the circuit board on the clock.

As above it lights all the time the ignition is on, so you can read the clock, but dims with the instruments....hope that helps

Can I join in this thread?

I have a d2 W reg . (Yr 2000) and everything still works superbly EXCEPT the light on the clock which went out about 2 months ago. How do I get the clock out??? I am assuming it is just the bulb that has gone but until I get the clock out I don't know. If it is just the bulb, I will then have to ask for help to buy what is needed to replace it

If I have to start dismantling the dash it will have to wait until my trusty mechanic can do it for me. I would be so proud of myself if I replaced it!!!!!! Sadly, my cars are for me to enjoy driving only as I am clueless about how they work and how to repair them.

I did do a car maintenence course soon after buying my first car (1965!) but the gentlemen on the course were just too eager to display their knowledge so I didn't even get a look in!!!!!! Since then it has been hand in pocket' and share my salary with garages! (Salaries are just a dream from the past, now.)

The clock just clips in from the front, so It can be removed without having to strip any thing else out of the dash. Its held by four plastic tabs, these can be released by sliding a thin flexible blade down the edges of the clock module, I used my wife's cake pallet knife, but anything credit card sized, say a paint/wall paper scraper...just ease it in till you feel the clips disengage, the clock will just pull out, watch because the plastic tags do break...one did on mine, but the clock seems happy with just three. I have been trying to remember if the clips are on the top and bottom or left and right sides.....I seem to think they were top and bottom, but take it easy and see how it goes.

Brilliant! Thank you so much for that. Tomorrow I will give it a try - weather permitting - and report back,

Fingers crossed. If it works I think you will hear my shreiks of delight. :):):)

Brings to mind the bulbs I have changed over the 14 years of ownership, It's not a lot. Rear o/s stop/tail twice (a pig of a job), auto selector x 2bulbs once and the hazard switch night illumintion once and that's it.

I've upgraded the head lamp bulbs and then upgraded again over the years and the side lights are now led but neither have ever failed.

LEDs are now fitted to interior lamps the (48 led panel style in the two main lamps) the glove box, side indicator repeaters (orange led) and door edge/puddle lamps.
I have now installed 2x24 green led strips concealed up under the bottom of the dash to illuminate the footwells when the door is open.

Defeated! I can feel the lugs on one side but just can't get into the other side as the clock seems such a tight fit - or is it me being too gentle?????? They seem to be on the sides as the top and bottom just seam to have no 'obstructions'.

I will have another go as, in theory, it sounds simple enough for me to do.

Can I get the replacement bulb on eBay? I do not know if the clocks are different on diff models but mine is square and is digital. I live in the middle of nowhere and a trip to Halfords is 72 miles in total and that is the nearest 'car bits' place. :( Brilliant for finding green lanes though!:)

If I remember the door lock switch is part of the clock, you cant get between them....it all pops out as a unit...yes you will get the bulbs on fleebay....they are rather small..cant say/think of the number, use an on-line parts supplier

Now that makes sense. I did wonder if they were joined together but ignorance made me nervous of forcing it! I'll have another go tomorrow. Thanks for you help. :)

Yipee! Yes, I've only gone and cracked it - not literally. I have tracked down the part number and the bulb is on order.

A huge thanks for all you help.
