Any idea whats causing noise

I'm having trouble pin pointing the source of a metallic spinning sound when the engine is under load, the noise is only when you accelerate quite hard or it's under load going uphill for example. I can only describe it as a tinny metallic rattle/spinning sound, any ideas what it might be or how I can eliminate things? Disco is a '95 300tdi with 130k on the clock.

i would look at water pump & other belt driven items first - but im no expert

take off turbo pipe & spin the turbine with your fingers - if it has loads of play or feels grindy when you spin it then its knackered !

Hmmm come to think of it it does only make the noise when it hits about 1750rpm which is when I guess the turbo is cutting in?

Offroadmad, when you say take the turbo pipe off do you mean the one coming from the airbox?

its the pipe that comes out of the front of the compressor housing - the silver bit !!
