Do a lot of DIY on the car these days but for the heavy lifting still take it in to the local dealership where I made a lot of "friends" in the early days of ownership. I had a host of minor issues to be looked at, changing UJs, flushing diffs, expansions caps seeping coolant, crankshaft seals seeping oil, all very minor but wanted to get them all sorted in one go. I have also decided I want to ditch my cats in favour of straight pipes. No legal issues out here. Did some research, read Rave and concluded my car has 2 lambdas upstream from the cats (as opposed to the 4 sensors,2 up and 2 down on later models) so resolved to keep them. Plugged in my Hawkeye and it can't read them at all. Must be well fooked I think so order a new pair thinking I'll fit em when we do the cats.

Guess what, no lambdas fitted! None at all, no plugged up holes, no orphaned harness connectors and its still the genuine factory LR exhaust system. Not a hint in Rave, not a word in any forums that I (briefly) searched. WTF???? Anyone who could give me a clue?

Not really a suprise, several overseas markets ran open loop, from memory Saudi,Gulf states and Aussie cars were made like this. The Gems ecu was just set up to run from all the other sensors with no feedback from oxy sensors.

I didn't know that. Seems odd to me that Aus would not have emmission standards but your explanation is the only thing that makes sense. I have a problem with running rich. MAF etc are all in order so I suspected the lambdas. Now not sure where to look.

A quick thought,(Wine onboard) is that the hose to the fuel pressure reg is perished - just a thought cos i'm fairly wobberly in a festive sense.:D

My Gems has just the two o2 sensors.I intend to remove the cats (not required here in SA).I have had without cats before withh the two o2 sensors and it ran fine.If I now remove the cats and o2 sensors can my existing Gems ecu be reprogrammed to run open loop?.

Are you sure there are no legal issues in Krautland? The legislation that says a cat must be fitted if fitted from new, is a European directive not English law as far as i am aware. But maybe the Krauts have not introduced it yet as the directive does not need fully implimenting until i think 2014.

Eight, I see your wine and raise you a cup of port! Cheers!

Tony I live in Germany half the year and in Bangladesh the other half for work. Drive a little Audi runabout in Germany and keep the beast in Banglaland. You should see the terrain I have to cover, my poor Rangie really has to work for a living (which is why I'm not stingy about keeping her in shape). Anyway, the MOT equivalent there has an emissions test that you either pass or fail but no rules to regulate the presence or absence of cats.

Wammers he say he keeps his LR in Bangladesh, and then drive a krout car in kroutland. He owns a car in each country. Slow down your reading or clean your glasses:D:D:D:p:p:p

Eeeeeexcept I only clarified in response to Wammer's question not before so he would have had to be clairvoyant. :D

Cup of port for you too then Trapper! Tis the season et al. Cheers! ;)

Testbook has facility to change between market territories in its sub -system tests menu, but I wouldnt do it.Maybe remove the cats, but I'd keep the oxy sensors.Gems is a good system and having oxy sensors for closed loop is a big part of why its good.
