what's going on with my rear wheel and camber angles

soz, was thinking classic. would be worth pulling it off now and having a look whilst it's in bits and replacing bearing if needed :)

Worth tightening nut and checking. Can't see bearing will have survived but stranger things have happened. If the bearing is duff does not sound like a bloke with a twenty ton press in his garage though.

There is no locking tab it is a stake nut.
I just have a big gold nut, is there anything missing from in the slot or do you bang the nut into the groove to stop it turning?

think if it's been moving that much the bearings probably need doing as I can't see that nut holding the whole lot together as it seems it just holds the shaft in place from pics? or does the shaft hold it all with the nut?? the smoke coming out probably means the bearings are funked, hoping i can get that screw out tomorrow so i can see what's going on!
hope the hub isn't damaged as they are expensive,

how do i spin the hub and feel for bearing grind as it's a 4x4?? the other wheel would spin and drag it off the jack surely?

thank you

What a silly place to have a hub diagram under air sus surely it should be diff/final drive axle!?!!

The wheel carrier (the bit with the studs in) goes through the centre of the bearing and is tightened against the halfshaft. The nut is a stake nut the thin flange on the end is staked into the slot in the halfshaft after torquing. If the nut is tightened to it's full torque it should never come undone anyway even if not staked. Someone has left it loose. It should be torqued to 192 lb feet and that is pretty tight.

so it's not like the old hub nuts which you were not supposed to do up too tight?
I will put the nut back on and take the car out of park and see what it feels like tomorrow as these bearings are soooo dear! don't know if my torque wrench goes to 192lb but i'm sure if I stand on it that'd be enough!! then I suppose you mean by staking I punch the flangeinto the groove??

cheers

Yep that's what you do. Don't stake it yet, if you have to change bearing you will then have to get a new nut.

haha I know I sound a bit thick but we all had to start somewhere! I have done up many cars over the years but these are a bit complex and I don't want to get it wrong!! especially if a wheels going to fall off!
strange as i've had a fair few wheel bearings go on cars but this one never made any sounds or rumbles or anything at all, it just smoked and looked a strange angle! once I've done all these jobs I will be an expert like you lot! difference is you all use your hands to do your spanner work and seeing as I don't have any I have to use my feet!!

But I know that's no excuse for me not having a 20 ton press! but I know a man who I hope has!

I have to doff my cap to you, just watched the vids, I never put the two names together till now, I remember watching the 'where are they now' programme...the one with the Ferrari...

You are a true don, I moan and complain about things that at the time seem like the most annoying and insummountable things....but your drive, determination and spirit is truly humbling....

If I could be half the man you are with half the determination and spirit you have I would indeed be a very lucky man.

Not many in this world get my admiration, but you, Richie, get it from me in spades....

Did you ever manage to get to play Jimmy White or Ronnie Sullivan by chance??

That is truly remarkable, respect mate. But i think you are going to end up replacing the bearing. :):):)

No not yet mate,
i'm sure if ronnie did meet me he wouldn't keep moaning when he loses and threaten to retire all the time, I wish I had his talent I'd have used it fully!
I hope some day to play/meet both, hopefully before jimmy is 93 and while i can still get my leg over the table!!

Right, I finally managed to get the screw out of the disc by wacking a flat bit in and then firing up my air impact driver!! but,,,, The disc was a different story, it would not budge, hours of banging and soaking in plusgas (which i did clean off!) she would not budge, so i did the big hub nut up and put caliper etc back on, couldn't feel any grinding when turning the hub but could not turn it far, no wobble at all though, so hoping the bearings survived!, wheel back on, still no play/wobble so good, but when i did hub nut up I stood on the ratchet as my torque wrench would not go up to 192 ftlb, i was a bit worried about damaging the diff or something but i did it as tight as it would let me with ratchet and small bar on the end, I burred the nut a little into the shaft but it didn't want to bend in with hammer and punch, so not sure what else i can do,
also when i did the hub nut tight I noticed some diff oil came out from the bottom of the plate behind the disc,,, is that normal!??
I also jacked the other side up and checked for play but that was ok,
will take it a few gentle trips and check it, hopefully i've saved it though as that disc is not gonna come off!!!
I couldn't turn the disc enough to bang it at different places, how are you supposed to turn it on a permenant 4x4 without all 4 wheels in the air?? or is that the only way?
thanks guys
