I have a discovery 3 tdv6, which I've owned since new (2 years in September). Car has done 28000 miles.

Since purchase I've raised issues with Shields Landrover in Glasgow regarding the Parking brake sticking / squeeling. As a result it was fixed / adjusted, then had to go back in to be fixed again (all within the first year).

Then parking brake fault on dashboard a few months ago meant car had to go in again. Dealer claimed it was a fault with the electronic parking brake switch and replaced it (under warranty). Yesterday I notice a terrible screeching from the rear of the car when braking.

Today I asked my neighbour who's a mechanic to take a look. Apparently the rear driver side brake pad has completely gone, to the extent that the disc is now badly scored.

Will now have to take into dealership first thing tomorrow morning (yet again) for repairs but feel I shouldn't have to fit the bill as there's clearly a fault with the parking brake.

Any guidance / experiences / thoughts anyone can offer would be much appreciated.

Cheers

brake pad is not a part of your hand brake on a d3,the hand brake is shoes in the back of the disc /drum . d3 suffers from sticky rear calipers if not serviced regulary and it will eat rear brake pads if its sticky.

Thanks for your reply. Apologies if this sounds like a stupid question - I'm no mechanic. Given the amount paid for the car and issues to date, I'm pretty ****ed off. Do you reckon it would be fair to argue that the park brake issues are the cause of the fault? Or as my gut tells me are they more likely to sight wear and tear and hit me with a hefty bill?

i work as a lanndy mechanic and no they wont. as its not a part of the foot brake and thats where ur problem is sorry for the bad news. u will need to replace both your rear discs as a pair or your hand brake and foot brake will be out of balance this means new hand brake shoes as well as the set up procedure for settinf the hand brake wont work with old shoes and new discs and brake pads ,and a poisible caliper but u might be lucky with the caliper as its usaly just the slids that seze up sorry for the bad news but it will let u no what u are in for

Jesus wept, any idea how much (roughly) that lot will cost? Is there no chance of arguing the toss as it's a 2 year old car? In your opinion is this likely to be just wear and tear? If that's the case I can see a complaint letter to landrover being drafted......

you can always argue with them thats what life is all about its worth a try.most dealerships will try to help u but its land rover them selfs that stop most warenty clames. if u have a good dealership thay might just put it thrue as a warenty job i hope they do but exspect the worst and any thing diferent will be a bonus good luck

Spoke to dealers today - initial response sounds like they'll be able to get Land Rover to pay for the repairs but need to wait until Monday to have it confirmed. In the interim called Land Rover assist and thus far the service has been nothing short of superb.

Technician arrived within 45 mins, car collected by AA about 20 mins later to take to dealership and replacement vehicle delivered to door about 25 mins after that. Replacement car a fully loaded Discovery 4 SDV6 HSE just out of the wrapper! Won't be too upset if it takes a few days for mine to be fixed!

Anyway, will give an update on whether Land Rover cover repairs under warranty next week.....here's hoping.

have to admit ive never heard of the having to have new shoes because you have had new discs before tho. yes pads and discs but not shoes aswell why nogo for a new epm for good measure.........

Since my last post about wonderful Land Rover Assist service etc things have now progressed.....

Just heard back from the Shields Glasgow dealership (who have had the car since Saturday!). Their response: "the front and rear discs and pads need replaced due to wear and tear, which is not covered by warranty". Cost = £540 for the back and £440 for the front!

Total cost of nearly £1,000 - I though they must be having a ****ing laugh! But no, this is not covered by warranty and is "nothing to do with the handbrake". As I argued this could not be the case in relation to the rear of the car was told "I can get one of the technicians to speak with you or perhaps arrange for one of the technicians to show you exactly what the problem is" - sounded to me like they were already prepared for this response - not surprising I suppose given that it's taken since Saturday to get this far!

Said I wasn't interested in that and wanted to speak to the boss. He was apparently in a meeting but would call me back before close of play at 5.30pm - result, no phone call!

To say I'm ****ed off is an understatement. The car is in bits, so I have little option but to approve the work, get it repaired then seek recompense. My gut feeling? - once they've done the work and I've paid for it in order to get the car back I can just bugger off and not darken their door again!

Reckon there's little chance of getting them to cough up no matter how much I complain. Next course of action? Get it repaired, sell the ****ing thing and never buy a Land Rover again for the rest of my natural life!

we get this a lot i work for a specilist and we do 4 or 5 d3 rear brake rebuilds a week all because the dealers wont cover them in warenty.as far as prices we supply our dealer with genuine parts as they cant get them at the price we buy them in it. its the friging dealers that give landrover a bad name.

If you are going to sell it - is the warranty transferable??
If not - get a landy specialist to fix it and not the main stealer!!!

I reckon it will still be lying in bits at the dealership. Do you know of any Land Rover specialists in or near Glasgow that would be able to collect the car from the dealership and repair it? Would they be willing/able to collect it if it's still in bits? I reckon the main dealer will want me to cough up just to put it back together again!

Sorry mate have never used 1 for a landrover.
Ill have a search but a quick google should sort you out!
I would phone em first thing in the morning and tell em to put it all back together - if you aren't going to get em to fix it probably time to cut your losses and take it to a specialist.

dont meen to sound funny mate but ...brake pads wearing out is due to how fast you drive and how hard you brake its no good arguing with them as any one who has any knowledge on these vehicles will tell you that brake pads is nuff all to do with your handbrake issue and yes its wear and tear!!!!!! but tbh those prices do sound excessive

so just get the rear brake discs done there and leave the fronts till next wek and have them done cheaper elsewhere...

possibly a good idea to have dealer set up the rear brake shoes, know i no other ppl may disagree, but here why.

when setting up shoes its best to put the EPB in mount mode (the cables get reset to the start position) to prevent the loud screeching that occurs.
also if the shoes are not set correctly u can garauntee theyll bind, also if dealer does not set them correctly theyll cover the cost of failure a month down the line,,
ill bet a back street garage wont
