Hi,

I hope i am in the right forum, I am new here (see anouncements).

Anyway, I have a Landrover Defender 110 200TDI, which has just recently started to make trouble when I want to shift into gears.

The problem is, that when it is cold, i.e. after standing for half an hour or first thing in the morning, the gears shift as smoothely as can be, but once I have driven a while, say around 5 miles the trouble starts slowly. I find it progressivel harder to shift into gears - up or down. They will eventuelly go in, but sometimes I get the grinding noise first, not very often, but sometimes. Most of the time it is just really hard to get the gear in.. I gets worse the longer I drive. When I then want to reverse, it just makes a grinding noise.

Yet, as soon as the landrover stands for a while, the gears shift back normally and no grinding noise when I reverse. Till I drive a while.

I have checked the clutch fluid and tried to google online what else it could be, but have found nothing. Like I said, I am very much a novice in car/landrover mechanics.

Any ideas? Appreciate your input

mmh, Iam no eggspurt but it does sound like the clutch isnt engaging properly. As it happens when the engines been running for a while it could be a bad seal on the cylinder or something expanding when everything warms up.

There will be someone along shortly who knows considerably more than i.

Good luck and :welcome2:

I'm no oil expert but int that auto transmission oil????????

You are right its. But Haynes suggest an ATF fluid for non-TD5 models. So, I hope it is the right fluid.

Till the oil comes and till I can do an gearbox oil change, could I top it up with EP90 oil. Would it do any harm to my gearbox?

who can say depends on how much and condition of baulkrings they have to strip oil off gear cone for gear engagement .engine oil if you must but mtf94 or dexron 2-3 atf

Like I said I int no oil expert, but the wrong oil is probably better than no oil...............

Check your level and if possible have a look at the state of the oil, then bat accordingly.

Thank you all for your advice.

I have changed the oil in the gear box just now, but unfortunately it did not make a difference. If anything it has gone slightly worse.
The funny thing while the gears are very hard to get in (1st, 2nd, and reverse only after a grinding noise) as soon as I switch the engine off, the gears shift as if there is no problem.
Any suggestions are very welcome

I would start by replacing the master cylinder seals, and then checking the cylinder itself for wear. You may have worn seals or cylinder. Then replace your slave cylinder seals and check the cylinder/piston. If you still have problems, then you may be looking at an internal gearbox problem such as worn synchro's

Thanks, I will do that.

fwiw I'd be looking in the clutch direction rather than gears - grinding/baulking sounds like the clutch is not fully disengaging once its warmed up. Leaking / sticking master or slave cylinder seals/pistons? Good luck. A
