Hi Guys

New problem on our facelift 53 2.0Td freelander manual:-

Started happening a few weeks ago, started as normal and ran for maybe 2 mins then just stopped. Would sometimes start immediately or take few attempts/mins to start.

Last week cut out completely when going along in a 30 and had to get it towed home, turned out the Bosch high pressure fuel pump had failed. This has now been replaced.

However problem with cutting out occured again twice today, both times within a few mins of starting engine.
Also partner has notice problems with indicators today (new problem) where they didn't seem to work properly, hazards were fine.

Vehicle has a new Pierburg MAF fitted a few months ago with a Roverron upgrade. All filters (apart from Fuel fileter) recently replaced.

Any suggestions/ideas? Possibly related problems?

Thanks in advance for sny assistance given!

Get a leakback test done on the injectors and check low pressure pump in the at the rear drivers side wheel arch.
I assume they fault code read you hippo and it came back as low fuel pressure?....mine had this and it was an injector fault.

Also remove the tune kit until you have sorted out the problem. Its something else not to wonder about and wont be effective until the fault is cured. Just a thought, but was the filter replaced at the same time?

I missed that bit, yep turn off yer synergy box although if it's the one with the maf compensator on I think you will have to leave that side of it switched on with the pierburg maf.
It's worth checking the common rail fuel pressure sensor (where the synergy plugs in). These contacts can become dirty and cause starting/running problems).
Whats the mileage on your hippo....fuel filters should be changed at 60k or earlier.

Fault was obvious, diesel was pouring out of the high pressure pump when you cranked the car

Just under 100,000 miles!
I removed and cleaned the connections to the Synergy box/pressure sensor last night and cleaned with electrical contact cleaner. Will see if this helps.

Don't know history of fuel filter, but I have one sat here waiting to go on when I have the time! (I believe its in the real wheelarch)

Wasn't sure if the indicator light problem could be related?

yep thats a common fault on them. The seals go on top of the pistons,,,normally top one, although it normally only occurs on 1st start of the morning and seals itself after about 30 seconds.

Well it had cut out after a few minutes of starting on a couple of occasions beforehand, so we hoped replacing this would sort it. But it doesn't seem to have done :(

I'd get the filter changed as soon as you get the chance.
It's just forwards of the rear wheel arch inside a housing with the low pressure pump held on with 2 bolts. If you do a search there should be a how to on here....it can be a complete ba....rd to get it out.
As for your lights, what are they doing?...Have you checked all lamps and connections are ok?.
I stopped using my synergy due to it causing premature wear to injectors......if theyre faulty or on the way out the synergy unit will make them fail quite quickly.

Yea, I have the guide already - its on my to-do list ;)

Lights - indicators work ok, then suddenly mid-use stop working completely, no noise, no flash on dash on on indicators. Happened with both sides and randomly.
I removed relay last night and gave it a good tap, also cleaned its contacts with electrical contact cleaner.
I have (years ago) taken a relay apart and cleaned the contacts with some emory paper as they can start to arc (Don't know if this unit can be taken apart and put back together)

I was wondering if the ignition switch could be the cause of these problems though....

How did you find out the synergy could cause premature injector wear?
I have put some inhector cleaner through it recently.

We did a trip to North Wales a month or so back and got over 500 miles out of a tank, so did feel it was running ok at that point!

If you use the synergy at the lower settings you should be ok.
At the higher settings you are really working the injectors as you increasing the fuel pressure which will end up killing any marginal injector.......mine was always set quite high.
Another thought my dad used to have a C5 with a synergy on it. He changed the unit with ron a couple of times as when he had it switched on the car used to stall after coming off the throttle from high revs......the prob never got solved, so he stopped using it and the problem never occurred again.

Your electical fault could be earth, stalk or relay, although someone who knows better will at some point be able to advise you
