Select Neutral Gearbox Problem as well as hot starting problems

Hi,

Ive just bought a 2.5 Diesel p38 dse (1998) AUTOMATIC and having driven 600 miles without any issues however today i took the old girl offroad and i transfered into low range to go through a sticky steep patch but after transfering back into high range i keep getting a message come up on the computer saying 'select Neutral'. I do this and the message doesnt disappear. I can currently drive it in either high or low without any problems let alone swapping between the two but i cannot get rid of the message ive taken the battery off in an attempt to reset the various ecus but still the message stays there as you can imagine its gettin bloody irritating.

Also the rangey starts up beautifully from cold but once shes warmed up i have to crank her over a fair few times (i think its probably a sensor that has gone but which one?)

Any help would be great

Check the connectors underneath on the transfer box. Check the battery voltage, they don't like low volts. Check that the lights next to the gear lever and the dash display show the correct selection of gear.
Hot start problems are common, low cranking speed can be one reason, so back to the battery. Otherwise get it plugged in and checked out.

As Datatek says the message will probably be cured by a crawl and a good clean.

However, as for the hot starting, the concensus seems to be that it's wear in the injector pump. With the price of a new pump or even a full refurb running into hundreds the usual trick is to fit a hot start kit that fools the engine electronics into thinking that the engine is cold even when it's hot. A trip to ebay if that's what you want.

Might I suggest that you amend your personal details on here so that you show a location. That way, as you run into further problems, any willing member on here might be good enough to actually visit and help you out.
