also it that diff has the early red carrier with the older type of cross pin arrangement and not circlips like the later black carriers. I wouldn't pay alot for an old 4.7 not much worth keeping all pretty weak sayin' that i do have a crown wheel and pinion in the front of my 90 fitted into a later carrier but this will be swapped out sharpish for a 4 pin and ashcroft arrangemwnt.

very true! however the later cross pin is less prone to snapping when abused as the whole pin is able to spin.

The diff two gears spin opposite directions on the pin and if one gets hot and seizes to it will rip apart the early type as the pin is fixed and not able to spin with the gear. With the later one you can have one gear seize and not snap the pin in half. If you weld them both then yes its gonna rip apart for sure but thats life.

If I was to rebuild a diff and it had to be a 2 pin i would use the later type in preference because of this and also machine them as per the even later cross pins to enable more oil around it to get the best from it.

soma red carrier and older type cross pin is junked only the pinion and crownwheel is any good and ashcroft are selling decent gearset for £200 for competing its hardly worth fitting std stuff because of the worry or it ripping out mid hillclimb or comp.

But the later black carriers on late series IIIs or indeed a 3.5 carrier and a spacer ring seem to outlast the older type.

Booger you steeling the olympic rings?

Hows Carpy whats he up to?

and what you have to remember that when 4.7 diff spins it spins faster than 3.54 so they do rip out easier

LMFAO. Dont be a ****!

What the hell has the sun and planet gears got to do with diff gear ratio!

spitfire LOL! Diff centre all the gears are the same waving a wheel in the air on either will go through the diff centre by the same ammount. Nowt to do with how many times you spin that pinion.

nope Indoor Karting on Sunday with Kai - should be brilliant. Apparently we can get a discount if a load of us booked up... might be a laugh to get 10 or 15 from here to meet up in north london on a sunday morning. At most it would cost a score each...
