Hi my freelander 4 cyl. 2004 1.8L had a hg replacement in 2005 under warrant. Never had a problem since then until recent sudden rise in temp gauge from slightly below half mark (where it always rest) to max hot with warning light & a second cooling fan kicking on. However, the engine water temperature would remain normal and if I switch off the car for just a minute and starts it again the gauge would return to normal readings & everything will be normal only ro recur suddenly in some future days. Any idea?

This sounds like it is overheating or a faulty temp sensor gauge
(single sensor on >2001 coil pack engines, two sensors on dizzy cap engines)

When does the temp rise? whilst driving or when stationary?

Actually the seemingly false temp gauge rise to max hot occurs when I am driving at above 60mph. Has not occured when stationary and it is erratic as the problem wouldn't occur for days/weeks only to recurr again after I am somehow settled. The temp gauge wouldn't rise gradually, when it happens the gauge will shoot from the normal below half mark to a max hot in a just second. Each time this occurs I would stop the car on the kelb open the bonnet and feel coolant & engine which will always be normal. What I have discovered though is that when the problem occurs, if I just stop the car and switch off the engine for about 10 seconds and restart again then the problem will be resolved and I can proceed driving with normal temp gauge indicator. funny!

Good thing is each time the temp gauge rise to max hot, the second pair of fans would switch on automatically.

it sounds like an electrical problem - it is giving the same prob as if the temp sensor is shorted. try shorting out the sensor and see if the symptoms are repeated.
