Hi all,

Quick one here ... Some time back I sprayed a fair amount of WD40 on the bonnet catch of my A-Class as it was sticking ... I know it's not a Landy but it is a general question. Since I did this I have been getting a very toxic smell in the cabin when the engine is warm.
I have been wondering why but tonight when I was re-gassing my air con with the engine running I noticed smoke coming from the exterior of the radiator which I'm assuming is overspill WD40. There were a couple of damp looking patches on the outside where it was coming from. Has anybody got any idea what is best to clean the fins with in order to get rid of the WD40 residue?

Well coolant level was spot on unless there's a big airlock or blockage somewhere! I'm sure I would have had a temperature warning if this was the case. Maybe just oil on the engine somewhere ... oh well, I won't linger on it as it's not a Land Rover! :eek:
 
Odd one Andy - not sure WD40 would be the cause, but you never know!

I'd give the rad a good wash with any old detergent (even washing up liquid although hard to keep it off the paintwork) and that should remove any WD40

If it doesn't and you really overdosed, get a small tin of engine degreaser and brush that on, leave for an hour and then rinse - you might need to use a dish pan brush to get into the fins.

Thanks Martin ... odd for sure, my mechanic had it in yesterday for a look and ran it for half an hour in his workshop and saw nothing. I've driven it into work today and the smell in the cabin is horrible but worse with the heater on. I've changed the pollen filter and re-gassed the air con too. I'm going to clean the radiator with detergent like you say and will also de-grease the engine with some Gunk or similar in case it's oil overspill somewhere. Anyway, it's not that important as it's not the Defender ;)
 
Sure you'll sort - should be a doddle after getting that waxoyl up off the drive:eek:

Hope you didn't put the cloths in the washing machine - I destroyed one earlier this year doing that - wife wasn't pleased, but does like the black LG repalcement machine I ended up buying to pacify:D

Ha ha ... no I didn't do that ... straight in the bin they went! ;)
 
Said you charged your Air Con up, It could be part of your aircon system, Our Mitsu Challenger had a weird whiff for a while, went to halfrauds and got a Aircon cleaner,

You run your engine and aircon let the can off and let it go for about 5 mins and it gets rid of bacteria ect in the system. Dont belive the bit about getting out and staying out whilst doing it, they just dont want you to get high ;)

That or some one has placed a fish in your system ;)

It wont be WD40 that smells horrible,I've been spraying it all over my trials bikes as a preserver for about 30 years.it smells quite nice when you are sitting waiting to go into a section and the hot engine wafts WD40 smells up at you.:p

I remember the smell now from my trials days, I rode an Ossa 250 MAR in the twin shocks class :)

Regarding the air con cleaner it was free with the Halfrauds re-gassing kit so I've done that. Also this smell arrived weeks ago and I only re-gassed it on Sunday. I think it's oil from somewhere so will be cleaning the engine to see if that helps.

An MAR ? good steering but no brakes eh ? Hoping to take part in a Mick Andrews trials training session later this year,he's a really nice bloke - and a bloody good rider.;)

That's the very bike :) Rode a Bultaco for a while too but that was my uncles spare. Heavy bike the Ossa but yes the brakes were crap when wet ... and as you know there aren't many dry trials!
I was a fan of Martin Lampkin as well as Dougie ... huge trials family.
Wish I still had time to do it ... at nearly 46 I must qualify for the veterans :rolleyes:
 
Same age as me..... I still ride most weekends,either on a TY250 or on my HT5 Ariel.
Twinshock and pre65 trials seems to be more popular than modern,I really enjoy it.

You know it makes sense ! I think most people that do bikes have breaks from them,but go back to them eventually.
Nice 250 Majesty or a 240 Fantic........:D
 
Start twisting - doesn't seem a lot of pennies for a lot of fun

Key question - would it fit in the back of the Landy?

46 isn't that old (i'm that age and don't feel that old (always))

One of my uncles (living in Canada) is 69 and still races bikes - so I wouldn't be hanging up your helmet just yet!
