hi guys here again.wot is is with 300tdi's one thing goes then everything follows..oh well..my car is struggeling to start when it does its very lumpy then it clears,it smokes like hell for first couple of mins then clears.white/blue smoke.
ive changed my leak off pipes as they were split.ive also noticed a ticking sound which seems to be from the back of engine but not all the time,im getting a light blowing when i take off oil filler cap,not sure if its supposed to do this or not,oil leak from back of engine, and loss of power,it pulls up hills as if ive got the van on the back.
thanks
guys

iether worn piston bores giving block pressure or head gasket especially with ticking which could also be manifold gasket ,or valve not opening fully due to worn valve cap or follower

so how hard is a head gasket to do,as diy mechanic lol,and while im at it what about followers.
if a follower is worn when i did tappets wouldnt this have stopped the knocking i had, also now i come to think of it its since i did the tappets the rough running and bad starting happened, hhmmm maybe need to recheck these,i think i set them right,
cold engine
exhaust and inlet 0.206mm as couldnt get 0.2
is that right
cheers
rich

landy's there grrrreat

Set tappets - valve clearances. I don't think it's really correct to say you set the tappets as they just sit in their bores and fly up and down, not anything you can do to "set" them.

tappets are set with adjuster screw with 13mm spanner sized nut locker,300 tdi doesnt have hydraulic tappets disocmania, did you use number nine method

I didn't say they had hydraulic tappets. I said "I don't think it's really correct to say you set the tappets as they just sit in their BORES..." (n. A hollow, usually cylindrical chamber or barrel, as of a firearm. The interior diameter of a hole, tube, or cylinder.) "...and fly up and down"

It's a personal opinion, it's a commonly used phrase but 'setting the valve clearances' is a far more accurate saying and a lot more people will know what that is and how to do that.

a tappet is part of the rocker that contacts valve stem cap and the gap is set which is known as tappet setting valve clearance is the measurement of vavle head underside and piston crown at closest point this can be adjusted by removing material from valve seat, follower hascontact with cam ,push rod transmits lift to rocker

A tappet is the bucket the cam lobes push against and not part of the rocker arm, Some people call Hydraulic lash adjusters (HLA's) tappets as well. Valve clearance is the gap you get between the tappet and cam lobe (on OHC engines) or the valve stem and the rocker arm (on OHV engines) when the valve is fully closed.

So depending on the engine layout it can be the valve clearances or the tappet clearances you are setting but essentially they are the same thing.

Its similar to the term rocker cover or cam cover. Some peope will just use either term for all engines but off course on a OHV engine its not a cam cover :)

Hope that helps.

...valve clearance is the measurement of valve head underside...

Incorrect, what you just described is valve head stand down.

The tappet is NOT part of the rocker, the tappet is the assembly of parts which sit down bores in the head. It consists of a tappet guide in which sits your cam follower or roller follower if you prefer, followed by a tappet slide. As for as the tappet goes, tappet OVER. Then there is a push rod, this takes the vertical movement from the slide and makes contact with the adjuster which actuates the ROCKER.

As they say a picture says a 1000 words :)

Oil on back of engine could be from your breather pipe. Check if its covered in oil. Thats where mine was coming from new pipe oil gone. Tapping noise could be your vacuum pump. try and get a long bar. Run the engine then when you hear the tapping place the bar on the vacuum pump and put you ear on the other end. If it's this then you will really hear it. Don't jump in the deep end. Check the simple things first

My breather pipe is wet through but i couldnt find anything wrong with it when i removed it.where would i get a new pipe from as ive only found one on ebay it was 39.00 quid i think thats a bit expensive for a bit of rubber

Yea If it's wet then its f@@ked. porous. I went to my local trading estate. Found a place that sells hydraulics fitments and piping. Asked for a meter of oil pipe took the disco one in to get the bore. cost £6 even matches the color of my disco. lol Not same shape but far better product. You will find it doesn't fit round the engine the same nice and neat, but in the end it's a far better jobby. For little money. Job done. Look in your local directory. For hydraulics.
When you do a Job for a few Quid. Where it would have cost a fortune at a garage. Thats when the satisfaction of owning a Landrover comes in.
