I've had a few bits of welding done over the last couple of years (thanks classic Kev!)... I know that he will usually weld from the bottom of the vehicle... seems to me like it would be easier to weld the plate to the inside on many occasions though. Is there any reason why the welded plate should be on the underside rather than inside? I can not think of a reason myself... and the amount of plating and patching I have to do on mine it would make things easier for sure!
 
I'm not sure exactly what you mean but when I plate I do a big rectangular plate the same width as the chassis so it is stronger and you can't tell it's there. It wouldn't fit inside.

Yeah... ok I get that but i am looking at welding the fookin floor... would you do one the same width as the vehicle?
 
if your cutting out old steel inside welding fine ,if not mot bloke all the mot bloke will see is rusty tin .i would all ways try and do it from inside if poss,overhead welding hurts,
 
im assuming your welder mate.... classic kev... is a classic car nut.... all the ones i know would class themselves as perfectionists and from my viewpoint tend to do jobs in the most difficult long winded way possible .... if the local garage sticks a patch in to get it hrough the mot its done the easiest way.
 
but then it is worth mentioning that if a garage does your welding for mot the "easiest" way - often the next year they will be chopping it out the next year and repairing it again .....

good business model really ....

where as your mate is probably doing it as a "job to be done right" so he doesnt have to do it again for you :D
 
Oh trust me... When Kev does a job he most certainly does it right!

I am tempted to go for the inside welding model I think. 2 reasons... firstly it will be easier and I am not an experienced welder and neither is Kai. Secondly I want the boy to do one or two of the plates for himself. His confidence could do with the boost but there is no way I want him laying upside down doing the job... he would be asking for trouble.
 
my fourtrak failed yesterday... one hole each side in the floor next to the rear wheelarch under the carpet.... simple 2 or 3 inch square patch... easy if done from above.... virtually immpossible to get at from underneath

I've had molten metal land on me many a time and it's not fun. I've had a scab the size of the inside of my ear when I was welding the chassis and a lump fell down my ear. Blood everywhere and then a scab for 2 weeks until I picked it off.
 
Its all part of the fun, getting covered in weld spackle! As long as the weld lasts longer than the burns your sound!
 
if I cant get to the outside I normally cut out the rot , plate the inside, fill the outside with epoxy then epoxy paint and underseal/paint both sides. looks good from both sides and lasts. Like you said esier to weld down hand. my leather welding jacked saved me from alot of burns on the bits I couldnt do that with.

Lol had one down the ear too, luckily not as bad as yours by the sound of it , got rid the little hairs though lol
