Male/female abs sensor wires help needed

So after fitting a new IRD to my freelander I totally ****ed the abs sensor in the process, Mot is due next week and my guy who does them for me says he won't be able to Pass it if the abs/tc/hdc lights are on, fair enough. Passing a scrap yard at work today I found a hub of a freelander with the abs sensor intact. Happy days. Here is the hub

Now after getting it home I popped the bonnet and disconnected the old abs sensor to find it has this type of end, for the sake of questions a will call this a female end.....

The one I picked up from the scrap yard has this type of end, we'll call this a male end.

Now my question is can I snip the end off and change it over female/male and plus it in or will this wreck the sensor, I snipped an old one and it's just two wires like this.....

You'll be hard put to get the sensor out of that hub without destroying it

No you misunderstand I'm using the hub I got from the scrap yard so I don't have to take the abs sensor out, straight swap for the one that's on my freelander.

Maybe I am missing something. The wiring loom has connectors near to each wheel and these have female plugs, each wheel has an abs sensor with a male plug.

If you have a replacement hub with a male plug - can you not just plug it into the wiring looms female plug?

No see that's the problem the wiring where it attaches to the loom in my car it's male and the sensor is male to..... So can I snip the end off and change it to a female or will this wreck the sensor.

I wonder if that hub you got has the wrong sensor fitted? I know the later Freelanders have different sensors but don't know if the male/female fitting is different.

I can check my 2005 Freelander tomorrow but hopefully someone else can confirm or deny

If the wires are two coloured in each end then match one for one. If not then its trial and error. One way should be right. On the other hand it could be the completely wrong sensor and have different resistances etc. And the bit you dont want to hear is for just over £40 you could have got a new Wabco one off ebay and spent an hour at most drilling out the old one and just slipped the new (and correct) one in.

Yeah but that would have been far to easy. Plus this hub is in better condition than the hub on my freelander, the disc cover is all corroded so it's worth swapping them over anyway. We will attempt sone snipping this afternoon and see what happens!

Yes I have a 1998 Xei and a 2005 model. Abs sensors on my 1998 model have a male end. Will check my 2005 just now

Right 2005 totally different plug with a male end. Just strange that on yours the male and female ends are the wrong way round.

Is yours a 3 door or a 5 door? Are the hubs different on 3 doors than the ones on 5 doors?

you can get either male or female sockets on pre 2003 it goes on chassis numbers. As the earlier ones are fairly cheap £40 or so is it worth changing the hub. I think that the resistance of the two earlier types are different so don't think splicing the right socket will solve the problem. If it does then let us know if you go down the changing hub route.

Ok so some progress I plugged in the sensor and the HDC light has gone out but the TC abd ABS light are still on? The guy who MOT's the car said that the lights might not go out and he would have to plug in his computer thing e ma jig to tell the ECU a new sensor has been fitted. Does this sound correct? Or should I spend even more money and just buy a new ABS Sensor.

NEVERMIND! Fitted the hub from the scrap yard and plugged the chopped ABS sensor in and waa-la no more warning lights, I guess the sensor needed to actually start sensing something before the warning lights went out. RESULT! I have posted a few pictures just so you can see why I wantedto change the hub the one from the scrap yard is on the left. Also can I just add I got the Hub with sensor for £25, took 15 minutes to fit and no drilling was required!

The scrap yard hub fitted....

And no more warning lights.... MOT here I come!

Good to know, I was wondering if cutting the plug and re-doing connectors would alter the resistance but you have shown that it will work fine

Your lights will be off but there will still be a stored fault. You can either get it cleared now or wait until they come on again in which case its elimination as you drive with the computer on live readout. Either way if they are off at the moment, drive on.............
