bought a freelander 2002 model 2.5ltr v6 was mot'd 4 days before purchase 2 days after i bought it the back exhaust box fell onto the back axle. i replaced all the brakes as i usually do with cars i purchase. then the ird unit went so was cheaper to change to 2 wheel drive. next i had to fix the drivers window. next i put it in for a service just to discover the timing belt was slipping. when timing belt was getting changed mechanic found the idler lying in bits at the bottom of the housing. so replaced the non automatic tensioner and the idler. just to discover that need new automatic tensioner. also needed breather hoses but more problems my main breather hose was not supposed to be fitted to british vehicles it was only meant to be on the ones for the american market in particular mexico. car still in garage waiting on the automatic tensioner being delivered. bought the car in september last year it has been more often in the garage than it has been on the road between buying it and all the repairs it has cost me the guts of 4 grand. anyone else had the same experience would be interesting to find out. if i ever meet the b#####d that i bought it off i think i would kick him in the nuts. on a good note the car looks good but thats it

Also a v6 owner. Engine replaced at 500 miles (we didn't pay) and auto replaced at 12k miles. Now on 27.5k miles and everything ok. Gets knocked about off road too. There are some good ones out there, but all too often we see peeps buying Freelanders which fall apart straight away. Hence why they were sold. some of it's down to dodgy servicing and repairs.

Have to admit I'm surprised yer enigne is ok, if the belt was slipping.

I think the reason Freelanders fall apart as soon as they are bought is because 'normal' people buy them as 'normal' cars and do not give them the maintenance they need. Then when the jobs all add up they just sell them. People buy them as they still look nice even though they are shagged internally. I spent weeks researching the problems, so that when I bought one, I knew what was wrong with it an dwhat would need fixing and how much the parts would cost me. I am the happy owner of what I consider a good Freelander and slowly working through the jobs. I will then have a very good Freelander.

I am having to work through all the jobs on mine I wish I had researched before I bought well I have no option but to keep spending money as even if I sold it I would never get back what I have spent plus need it to tow caravan

Well I've not had mine long but I know before I got it that I would need master and poss slave cylinder and clutch.
I've read about vcu needs changing every so often but I'm not clear on how to test it. Read somewhere about a reversing test. When I reverse with full lock the car does feel odd. So would like to check it out.
What other things need changing periodically??

You bought the unreliable engined one sadly. If you'd gone for the Td4 then you'd stand a better chance plus it's a timing chain engine. The ancillaries can fail as can the vcu/ird but the engine itself is fairly bulletproof plus it's available with the excellent auto option like yours.

Yer but no but all tratter boys un girls is durdy. Un they has biscuit tins cuz they dun't know any betterer. Not me. I've got a Freelander. Creature comforts is what I likes. Hence why I'm wiff the range rovers this week. Me thinks they is snobs, cuz they dun't want ta play out. Either that, or they has whats known as a sense of humour failure. Which is ironic considering the vehicles they choose to drive. Will find out and report back.

I bought a 2001 V6 petrol, only things Ive done was, replace top radiator hoses (cos the T connector broke!), Im replacing the expansion tank (it arrived just need to fit it), and put on 4 new tyres.

Before I bought it I had no idea about any inherant problems re
Freelanders, cos I didnt do my research.

Love the looks and the sound of the Petrol V6 and the performance aint bad (when you've stepped out of long years of owning/driving rattely Vans ), cant say Ive noticed the mpg's are that bad, turning arc isnt that good but you get used to it, all the electrics work and do what they should.

Gotta say tho mine was an ex Govt car so most of the serious things have been attended too (taxpayers paid for it to be done! )

Km's are a bit high (185,000+km's) but thats really nothing for a 10 yr old car on Oz (we do alot of km's here)

Have yet to take it on a long run (been waiting for the expansion tank) but think all in all it wasnt a bad buy .............. time will tell!!

Silly question but can you just swop out the v6 for a td4 lump - there are more in breakers these days and the saving on mpg alone must make it a possibility.

Re the IRD and VCU I have had a Freelander for the past 10 years - 2 infact as I have just got a td4 to replace my old 2.0L Rover engined one. The only problem that I had was the VCU which if not changed will take out the IRD - the VCU is a drive in drive out replacement at less than £300 all in and lasts for about 80-100k miles so with my latest 03 plate one with 87k on the clock it is being done in the next couple if weeks as a precaution - it's sorted then and I have piece of mind.
