Securing the New Battery

Hi everyone,

I recently bought a 1997 4.6 HSE.

I removed the dead battery and noticed it had been just plonked in the battery tray. No battery clamp bar, no battery clamp rod, both missing. (I've since bought the bar, pictured).

The replacement battery is a couple of inches taller than the old one, so before I buy a battery rod (the bit that points skywards) I wanted to ask if it is tall enough to see over the top of the new battery.

I am an office paper-pusher type, with no car skills*, so if you'd secure the battery differently then please please say how.

Get a length of threaded rod from your local DIY store and just cut it to the length you need. Cheap and easy.

Have you thought that it maybe because you have fitted the wrong battery?

I had the same problem when I bought mine - all the battery fittings were missing. Unfortunately the lpg converters decided to put the lpg ecu in the battery tray which wouldn't allow room for the standard battery. All done prior too my ownership. Made it a bit of a pig to find a battery to fit the hole when it died.

Since I off road a bit, it was fairly important to resolve the lack of battery security (cheers again Keith).

I think what you will find if your battery is taller, is that you will need to bend the retaining plate to fit, once you've found a longer threaded bolt but you're going to have to be careful as it might not be long enough if you have to bend it too much.

It ought to be simple enough to make up a suitable plate yourself though, thinking about it.

Thanks to Datatek I have now trawled ebay and blown £10 (inc postage) on a 300mm threaded rod, some nuts, bolts & washers, and a 100mm threaded rod. If it all works, I'll post a photo!

You should only need one rod the front of the bracket bolts to the slam plate, you should see a hole with a thread.
