Hi everyone , I,m hoping someone can help me out here , my disco , (300 tdi) has developed a clicking sound,IT sounds as though its coming from the drivers side of the engine , it started about 200 miles ago , and I haven’t got a clue what it is ,
The noise is like when you put a piece of card or a lolly stick in the wheel of a push bike and ride it , but a bit more metally ,if you know what I mean.
I can only hear the click when I accelerate ,when the car is under load so to speak , when driving along it is clicking ,if I take my foot of the accelerator it stops , if I push the clutch in and rev , no clicking ,any one got any ideas
iv.e had a new clutch , and a new fuel pump fitted in the last 1000 miles , apart from turning up the volume on the stereo so I can't here the clicking , I ain't got a clue what to do …….
anyone got any ideas ???,.,,,,,,,

It could be something like the turbo pipe contracting and touching the spinning alternator fan blades - or a twig touching them - or summat in the turbo - does it do it very fast?

The fact that it only does it under load would tell me that it is probably something to do with the turbo but may well be the pipe contracting as it sucks.

the clicking will speed up the faster i go , then when i change up a gear it will slow down or speed up if i change down ,,,,,,,,,,,

Just check the turbo pipe and its proximity to something spinning. The suck pipe will contract and move a few inches when the turbo kicks in, so check it all over for wear. Might even be something touching the pipe like a heater cable etc - i think the pipe contracting is pushing something onto a pulley or belt or fan or something. That would be my first check!

Thought that but they wouldn't be engine speed related, they would be directly proportionate to speed wouldn't they?

Where does he say it's engine speed related?
Also, says it happens only under load and that's another clue.

Only a possibility though!

It is most likely a noisy brake vacuum pump.

Mine does exactly the same thing.

They are about £95 off eBay (make sure you get the Wabco one) and it is a dead easy job to fit. There is a piston in them driven from the engine and they get noisy.

It will fail eventually and you will have no brakes so look to get it done sooner than later.

again

why only under load?

Coz on idle or overun, it is too quiet to be heard and not sure on this one but does the vacuum pump actually do anything unless the vehicle has gear engaged and is effectively moving?

Thanks for all the suggestions guys , the clicking has now been cured , the problem was that 2 exhaust manifold bolts had come loose and had been lost , allowing the gasket to “chitter” , so it wasn’t clicking after all ,( wot do I know ) , 2 new bolts and a new gasket , problem sorted , ,,,,I can turn the radio down now ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,
