Anyone have any decent ideas on how to fit and wire some running lights

Into the bumper...
Will it need a relay? It will be going to a switch on the dash centre console.

If you have seen the Twisted Alpine vehicle then you will see what I mean. However I'm really not prepared to shell out £410ish for their version.

Leds don't need a relay, they use tiny amounts of power. Just wire them into the fuse box through a switch. If you want a fuse it will be tiny.

Rather than set them in the bumper, which believe me is a pain in the Harris to cut, why not set them into the aluminium body work below the headlamp finisher?

That way they'd be protected if you were to nudge something by accident and would be far easier to install.

I have just fitted some semi recessed front fog lights into my bumper and cutting the holes out with a jigsaw was seriously hard work for me and the jigsaw!

Why don't you wire them into your sidelights then turn them on all the time? That's all sidelights are for anyway, parking and in broad daylight, any other time it is illegal not to have dipped beams on, i.e. adverse weather conditions, dark (generally from the point street lights are on).

I almost always run with some form of lights on, I keep meaning to wire my sidelights into a ignition switched live so I can have them on all the time. Then the switch will become an override for when the ignition is off.

Yesterday I was out on the motorway, it was heavy with rain, visibility was low particularly behind me due to spray on the road and someone came along with not a single light on, and this is a regular occurrence really, I could not actually see him, if I had pulled out I would have become a statistic. A reason why I am very cautious when driving in the wet. Shortly after a car came along with joke sidelights, ones that barley even light up and that was a joke too. Hence why legally you are meant to have dipped beams on.

What concerns me is the oblivious ones, who just look, think great no one there and pull out.

It's not to see but to be seen!

Ah think your under the assumption that they have looked

When the reality is that they think they have the right of way.

And if they're indicating then they most definitely have the right of way

AH! I see! Cheers for that, I have been driving about thinking that they needed to look, so really I need to be prepared for anyone without notice to come out?

Sometimes they pull out then indicate, which is nice, it warms me there is a small chance there might be a yellow flash next.

Just noticed yr up in Lanarkshire, I believe some folk up there are still adhereing to the old Highway code, however be advised the further south you go the less folk bother with the old tedious rules of the road.  :D

Can I point out that here in Dorset, about as far south in the UK as you can get before you get wet feet, some of us still exercise mirror, signal, manoeuvre.

Well done Dorsetshire peoples. :D

I noticed you only said some though :p ;)

As a rule though the standard of driving does seem to get worse from North to South.

And in fairness I think your right there is a similar West to East deterioration in the south of the country.

Anybody here from Kent ?? :D :D :D

It is legislation now all cars manufactured this year legally must be fitted with drl's
Also it's good to supplement the otherwise not great sidelights with something a touch brighter that I know can be seen by others

Most places in Europe now it is law that you have to drive with headlights on all the time...it may seem to be a pointless exercise but the accident rate was cut hugely here when introduced.

When I'm in the Uk and drive on the motorways in bad weather I am amazed that people dont have lights on...well, no maybe not amazed...there are still some people that think somehow it drains the battery or something...

Even in good weather you can see a car with lights on way better than one without...personally I think its a good idea for once. Even 25 years ago when i started riding bikes I had the headlight on dipped all the time...

Got no problem with using dipped lights....I prefer to keep the number of people who pull out in front of me to a minimum.
Dunno a about lines of leds though....look a bit odd on my 2a :D
As an aside i thought driving with side/parking lights only was illegal

No, driving with fog lights on is though...although you wouldnt know it with the amount of 'look at me, i have an attention seeking behavioural problem' arses there are on the road..

Over here all cars are sold with the lights directly wired to ignition...so you cant drive without at least dipped on...has been like that for many years.

Yep - all bikes now sold in the UK (and probably all of Europe) have headlights on with the ignition. Ever since getting on two wheels I've always ridden with dipped headlights on - I could never understand why you wouldn't want to make yourself as visible as possible.
