Hello,

Does any body know where I can buy a 200tdi (discovery) oil dipstick tube complete with olive please? I think my exisiting pipe's olive has worn because my readings have been up and down all week (I've been keeping an eye on it).

Thanks

might be me , but that dont make sense or are you saying tube moves in and out of hole ?

It doesn't make sense no, BUT it is a well known problem on the Tdi's. The dipstick tube is secured with an olive and a nut into the sump. The olive can either wear or slide down the dipstick tube a little and in return the dipstick tube then moves up or down (through the lock nut) into the sump. It might only be slight but in oil reading terms, a few mm is a big difference!

I'd fit another olive but if I can get the whole tube for around a fiver, I'd do that instead because it comes with the olive 'stuck' in the right place. That way, I know that it's set to the right length.

Cheers for the link :). It's not quite the right one but im sure I'd be able to adapt it to fit. I had a look on the lrseries website and I noticed that there are a few dip stick tubes for about £25, one of which is no doubt the 200tdi one! They're expensive engines part wise for some reason

It's moving up and down? I cannot accurately comment on a 200tdi dipstick, but I assume from your description it is the same as the 2.5NA/TD dipstick tube?

If the olive has come loose then it means it needs compressed some more, stuff the dipstick tube in as far as it will go and horse the nut down some more. It might need taking out, cleaning etc but the olive should tighten up.

Are you sure it's moving up and down, and your not just taking your oil readings at different times? Remember if you take the oil soon after engine shutdown a lot of oil will be up top, if you take it even 10 minutes after shutrdown, the oil can be seeping back through all the oil galleries through the filter and into the sump, what sort of filter do you have fitted and how old is it. If the non return valve is A non existent, or B leaking then it could change even after a fair length of time after engine shutdown.

I would be doing lots of inspection work and expecting to fix this problem without much more than some cleaning and spannering.

Hello, I had a good look at the dip stick tube and I don't really see any way that it can move to be honest. It's attached to the air intake manifold at the top and the pipe is secured firmly where it enters the block. As for readings, I took them with the engine cold and the landy on flat ground. It looks like diesel has been contaminating my oil again though which would explain the fluctuating levels. My nice thin oil has found its way out of the engine onto the ground beneath as well as burning off on startup etc and it looks like my lift pump has suddenly started to dump more diesel into the block over the last week.

Thanks for your reply!

Is it? It's a new one on me.

It was new to me until the other day when I stumbled on a thread at lr4x4. I searched for it on google and there are numerous threads on it at Land Rovers Only and similar 4x4 forums etc. I think it's utter bollocks mind - it can't really drop looking at it.
