Just bought a V8 '95 Disco, 3.9. I noted it had a slight knocking sound , which appears to be from top area of engine. It goes when revs increase above say 1200 to 1500 rpm, engine is quiet otherwise. I have heard that LR V8's can get cam knock due to some slack in positioning of the cam and LR issued tech note on this. Anyone had this and if so how do you fix it? What happens if you dont!!

Try putting in some castrol magnatec in it , quietned mine down a treat over that comma cheap ****e. mine only does it about 10% of the time now lol

worn cam sticking followers worn rocker arms anything over 70k needs a cam as worn.
as for the slack that is called wear and tear! there is a cam keeper plate which can be fitted but only stops the cam rocking back and forth at high rpm

Any particular personal experience of Comma to give you that opinion? Granted it's cheaper than some of the other brands but their 15/40 & 20/50 that I use/have used has a higher spec. than LR's stated requirement & neither of my 3.5's have developed any noises. I am a great believer in the saying 'you get what you pay for' but sometimes you can pay over the odds for the name. My current 3.5efi has a genuine low mileage & I look after it so I welcome anyone's (constructive) comments.

I had comma in it , it was noisy.

Mangantec in it - it was quiet.

Proof, pudding etc:D

H'mmm, not quite the technical appraisal I was looking for but I suppose as opinions go.....
Alternative theory : Engine had too much tolerance (sounds nicer than shagged) & needed a thicker oil  My last 3.5efi had 155k under it's belt but wasn't 'noisy' running on Comma 20/50. Have tried Duckhams in the past but whatever expensive oils are supposed:cool: to do, it didn't. Used to use Unipart 20/50 but changed to Comma as my local acc. store is an agent for the brand.
