Shock absorbers

Anyone know a good test to see if shock absorbers are in need of replacement.?

Bit iffy/bouncy/rolly/small potholes seem to shake my head from side to side.
What other symptoms prevail?

I appreciate in advance any help

Tough one. I've just taken the back shocks off me 110 thinking they were ok. No noticeable symptoms of failure while driving. One of em is totally goosed, no damping at all, and the other isn't much better. Never mind it's just a few more kilos for me scrap pile:cool:
 
When you push it up and down it should return to its original height straight away, rather than swaying away a couple of times.

You could always go on a flat and measure and compare each side

ye could try takin' them off and test them. Took mine off the other week, pushed a couple of them down and they stayed down!! The other two made 'whale' noises pushin' them down but they came back up slowly! Took them back and they were replaced for free;) Good to have a 2 year/ 50,000 mile waranty;) :D :D
 
Checked the bush's on my rear shocks last week & they were fooked, so I'm gonna change the shocks as well while I'm at it.

Question is: any benefit from getting gas rather than standard oil shocks?

Front ones look a right piggin fookarr to remove
Back ones look easy though.
 
3mm cutting disc thro the bottom bush above the nut and the washer for the rear shocks works quite well after you have bent all your 8mm spanners trying to grip the bottom of the shock to stop it twisting. If in doubt of the shocks replace em cos there so cheep. Pads sell ****part ones for £9.50 each with all the bushes and so on.

I bought Britpart gas ones from Paddocks, about £50 the pair from memory, came with polybushes.

Good fit and work well.

They usually only fail the MoT if they're leaking or rusted through. Otherwise, the push-down-and-return test quoted above is fairly reliable.

A stilson on the body of the bugger works espesh if you're not putting em back on so don't matter if you damage em.
 
That looks far to civilised Buster. Wheres the molon rubber bush in ya face and a fuel tank being sprayed with sparks? Besides thats far too quiet... I have to let the neighboroughs know im still here every now and then:)

Aye it is a wee bitty civilised D-I:D But ah learned from me mistakes when usin' an angle grinder the very first time ah did them. The soddin' thing caught summit somewheres and the blade took a likin' for the back of me finger at the second knuckle length ways!!

i used one of them rubberised strap wrenches to take my rear shocks off, bit fiddly but once ya get a grip on it it soon comes off,
an it didn't do ant damage at all:D so just put the old ones back on
