Steering judders like off balance washing machine

Thanks for all the good advice in this thread that was very useful. Turns out the problem was a dead steering damper and a few loose joints that are now fixed. Nice to be able to drive on the highway again without fear of wobbling off the road!

Steering judders like off balance washing machine

presume the arm is not moving relative to the shaft coming out of the bottom of the steering box unfortunately the arm is moving relative to the shaft coming out of the bottom of the steering box - at least enough that I can move the arm up and down a little whereas all the other parts of the...

Steering judders like off balance washing machine

Oddly enough the juddering starts when I hit a small bump but rarely a big one and seems to happen more on tarmac than on dirt. It starts as a small judder and if not stopped by braking builds up to a more serious judder that has its own momentum like a swing moving in a bigger and bigger arc -...

Steering judders like off balance washing machine

How did you check the damper, did you take it off and try and compress it Nope :o Looks like I need to do this, as all I did was look to see if I could see any dints in the cylinder or damaged bushes then tried to shake whatever I could get a hold of to see if anything would budge that...

Steering judders like off balance washing machine

Crawled underneath for a bit of a look and found steering damper and most of the ball joints seem to be ok but there is play in the top joint of the drop arm that according to this diagram connects the steering box to the drag link in front of the axle. Could that be the cause of the problem?

"Swivel bearing pre-load is one of the most common causes..." Thanks. Good to know I'm not the only nut who has run into this problem :-)

Steering judders like off balance washing machine

After a long bush trip on rough roads I have got a problem with the steering of my 2-door V8 classic that sometimes starts to judder like an off-balance washing machine. The steering problem comes every now and again when I hit a small bump and stops when I hit the brakes. When I am stationary...

Cleaning air filters in the bush?

Can I clean the cone-shaped air filters on my Range Rover classic v8 petrol engine without spraying them afterwards with a light coating of 2-stroke oil as I usually do? Here in the backwoods today I would like to clean the cone-shaped air filters on my Range Rover classic (they are full of...

Nuts to trade RR Classic for Discovery?

So you learned from your experiences and now drive around in a RRC with a Focus on the back seat so if you go thru another hedge in the RRC you can just continue your journey in the Focus, right? Sounds like a practical combo as fetching the morning paper in a V8 does tend towards overkill...

Nuts to trade RR Classic for Discovery?

Datatek, if you were going to drive 6000 km on tarmac and 1000 km through mud, pot holes, creeks and bush in the next four months would you "avoid any land Rover product and buy a Jap"? I can see your point Rasheed about the "devil you know" that really does make a big difference now that I...

Nuts to trade RR Classic for Discovery?

Sex appeal or common cents; can't have everything, so am considering trading my classic v8 (2-door, petrol, 5-speed gear box) for an early model discovery 200tdi 2-door to reduce my fuel bill. I am not a mechanic and live in a remote corner of east africa so ease of maintenance and reliability...

    V8 oil consumption

Looking into this found a small puddle of oil just behind the fan belt on the front of the engine. One bush mechanic nods his head and tells me this is a minor problem that can easily be fixed by replacing a gasket. Another bush mechanic (who wants to sell me a tdi engine) shakes his head and...

    V8 oil consumption

We got the engine out (with a tractor haul) and replaced all the seals when I bought it a few months ago. Since then took a few long highway trips with virtually no oil loss that seems to have gone up since I started doing bush trips. So maybe something has shaken loose? My concern is that I am...

    V8 oil consumption

How much engine oil is ok for a Classic V8 3.5 petrol engine to swallow before a trip to rehab is recommended? I find that I have to top up about 1 litre every 1000 kilometers. But it doesn't blow any smoke and runs fine. Is that a lot or just "normal" for this engine?
