    Freelander 1 Shake, rattle & smokey TD4

Thank you for your responses. Hippo goes in on Monday. The initial feedback is glow plugs or possibly injectors as you suggest. Sorry if this is an oft asked question but are the injectors one to fit all TD4 models or are there specific ones that require the electronics to be told which type...

    Front Prop question

An update on this thread. 15k miles later and the ebay option worked a treat for the diff. Also went for a 2nd hand propshaft assembly from a scrappies off a low mileage vehicle. New tyres all round and the running gear is operating well - hope that has not jinxed it! Thanks all!

    Freelander 1 Shake, rattle & smokey TD4

Hi all Got an issue with my freelander TD4 54 plate with 145k on the clock. She was smoking a lot for a few thousand miles recently, not great power and the consumption was 360 a tank. Read some of the posts and put Redex in the tank for the last 1k miles. Also changed to premium fuel. Well...

    Front Prop question

Hippo First - apologies for my delayed response. The guides you posted are are excellent, however this is my only transport and I cant afford to wait for parts if I uncover something else, so in my situation a trusted local garage will be used. I have done various jobs to the freelander, but...

    Front Prop question

Been looking at the sideways moving problem of the front propshaft. It seems to be that this a complete propshaft needs to be purchased. Can anyone recommend where to source a replacement? Rear diff off ebay £100, Recon rear diff £350 (ouch), recon VCU £200, Labour approx £200, Tyres £275 so...

    Front Prop question

Bear I would say the shaft is moving. Best description is that if i grip the prop it visibly moves as i look a long the prop towards the front as the pic I posted. The movement occurs just beyond the gaiter near where the first the set of bolts are in the pic. There does not appear to be any...

    Front Prop question

Cheers Guys. Had a closer look today and the front prop shaft where the gaiter is attached can be seen to move and this is where the clank noise is coming from. Pic taken from online source. I have been having a problem with the rear DS tyre losing pressure. I jacked up the rear DS wheel and...

    Front Prop question

James Is the bevel gear the part that is inside the IRD and it could be the bearing aoround the shaft of this? I have the haynes guide but it has been "tidied" away so cant find any references to help me identify the parts/culprits. Cheers

    Front Prop question

Hi Got a question related to the front propshaft on my 54 plate Freelander TD4 with 130k on the clock. Things were going well following the EGR fix - car felt great right up to yesterday. Car has started juddering at the rear on tight turns at corners, I would say when power is applied exiting...

    Egr Blanking Mod

Done my EGR mod at weekend along with intercooler hoses. What a transformation. No hesitation pulling out at junctions any more. Engine pulls cleanly upto 70mph - I'm sure it would do up to 90mph. Car has 132k miles and runs better now than it did with 60k miles on the clock. In side the EGR it...

Freelander 1 Black smoke, erratic running & engine management light!

Hi HD3 You were spot on about the jub clip a wee 6mm spanner did the job. Will make sure about locating the clamp correctly. Did you notice any difference with the EGR mod?

Freelander 1 Black smoke, erratic running & engine management light!

Arctic2 Thanks for that. Had a good look over the hose and decided that I could replace temporarily until the new ones arrive. The lower jubclip was fiddly to remove. I cut the LHS hose at the split and reattached. Restarted and the amount of smoke was worse than before! Just needed a good foot...

Freelander 1 Black smoke, erratic running & engine management light!

Hi Yesterday had black smoke out the exhaust of my 54 plate freelander TD4 (130k miles), along with erratic running and the engine management light coming on one week after passing its MOT! Thanks to this site I think I have it sussed. The long LHS intercooler hose has split at the...

    Squealing while driving

The wee freelander has grown on me quite a bit but the only thing that I dont like is the uncertainty of the condition/operation of the VCU and knock on effect on the rest of the drivetrain. Do you think driving over softer terrain (say on the beach) would reveal any clues as to the state...

    Squealing while driving

Hi Smurph Had the rear brake squeal before which stopped when the handbrake was gently applied. Just needed to clean up the rear drum and apply copper grease to the pivot points. Mike I will have a look under tonight and check - may need to refer to manual to locate as not that familiar with...

    Squealing while driving

Thanks Nodge, Running 4w and have 110k miles. Think the VCU is okay as car the car feels quite loose (in a good way) except when reversing full lock which from what I read is okay. Dont know if the VCO bearings are okay. Pads & discs done two months ago. Calipers were seized and needed lubed...
