    Cause of MAJOR problem??

The way the car acted it's definitely runaway...........we did manage to close the M25 for a few mins because of the smoke. I'll get the garage to look at re turbo etc but my only hope is that the car only burned away a couple of litres of oil as that was all it took to fill it up again so...

    Cause of MAJOR problem??

That's a great deal. If I need a new one I'll contact them. THANKS for the info. Another brief question - why did the car keep revving AFTER I'd turned off the ignition? Does that suggest other issues...............what a day!!

    Cause of MAJOR problem??

Thanks, I'll get that checked first thing and let you know the outcome. Having had a quick look at the web seems a recon will set me back at least 500 quid........any idea how many hours it takes to replace? Cheers

    Cause of MAJOR problem??

I hade my wife and son in the car so they were quite shaken by it all. I'm thinking if it was a petrol car then it would've caught fire and all talk of turbo problems would be a little redundant. Get the feeling my call to the mechanic tomorrow will be a painful one............

    Cause of MAJOR problem??

Thanks for the speedy reply..........oh dear it seems like this might be an expensve Sunday! I changed the crankcase breather about 8000 miles ago and it was a like for like replacement so I don't think it was the BMW part (is that the plastic rather than the foam?). Would the crancase breather...

    Cause of MAJOR problem??

Hi All, I've got a TD4, 2005 plate Freelander sport, done about 120 000 miles, well looked after. Has had recent fluid/oil changes, new fuel/oil filters and also recent crankcase breather filter change too. Driving for about 25 mins around the M25, loss of power down to 50 mph. Pulled over and...

Power loss at 60/70 AFTER VCU/Drive shaft installed

Hi All, just a brief update on this. Have just driven the car 500 miles over two days without any issues at all so I suspect the lack of power was due to water in the fuel (heavy snow that day and just a coincidence that the VCU/drive shaft had been re-fitted a few days before. Over the 500...

Power loss at 60/70 AFTER VCU/Drive shaft installed

To briefly answer the above - when was the fuel filter last changed and the low pressure fuel pump - about 15 000 miles ago. Old pump failed so did both at same time. Time for the OWUT was around 35 seconds. Tyre wear - had new tyres put on front 12 000 miles ago (which as the VCU/drive shaft...

Power loss at 60/70 AFTER VCU/Drive shaft installed

Thanks. The test indicates that the VCU is fine. Also no issues when turning on full lock either forward or reverse and tyres on front and back same make and size/wear. So I don't think the loss of power was a VCU issue..........don't know if relevant but the loss of power occured driving up an...

Power loss at 60/70 AFTER VCU/Drive shaft installed

Just a quick one on the one wheel up test...........should the car be in 1st gear or neutral? Thanks

Power loss at 60/70 AFTER VCU/Drive shaft installed

Just a brief update. I've just taken the car along the local dual carriageway which isn't inclined much. The car got up to a good speed c 70 without any loss of power. So was it the hill that the car found an issue when it lost power last week, or to put it another way did the VCU do something...

Power loss at 60/70 AFTER VCU/Drive shaft installed

Thanks, I have looked at this. If the solenoid was the problem wouldn't the power loss have been evident when the VCU/drive shaft weren't on the car? Or would putting that back on have shown up the solenoid issue? Thanks

Power loss at 60/70 AFTER VCU/Drive shaft installed

Thanks for the replies. Is the power loss/VCU connected because of the temperature of the VCU at higher speeds? And is that why there is no power problem at lower speeds below 50mph? Thanks.

    Freelander 1 Tyre Query on 2005 TD4

Hi, since that post I did then have a problem with a loss of power over 60/70 mph.........seems I may have to check the VCU as suggested. Thanks

Power loss at 60/70 AFTER VCU/Drive shaft installed

Hi All, 2005 TD4 Sport - 110 000 miles. I posted about the VCU/drive shaft removal last year. Turned out it was actually a rear diff brush issue. As a consequence I had the VCU/drive shaft put back on the car last week and all seemed fine. However I took the car on a 60 mile motorway journey on...

    Freelander 1 Tyre Query on 2005 TD4

Just a brief update on this. I finally got around to taking the landy to a mechanic who knows his stuff. Turns out that the front/centre rear diff brush is damaged (although not quite at the end of its usefulness). So it WASN'T a VCU issue after all. Have had this put back on the car and...

    Freelander 1 Tyre Query on 2005 TD4

Thanks again to all for your consideration. Just a brief follow up query........I've got the prop/vcu/shaft on the garage floor as I kept it after it was removed. Is there any way I can tell that the VCU is still operational now it's off the car? Long shot I know but given the vast knowledge...

    Freelander 1 Tyre Query on 2005 TD4

Thanks all for your considered replies..........grateful to you all. My take on this is I will get an opinion from someone else to see if it is the rear diff mounts. Am I right in assuming that anyone who knows their stuff will be able to tell if it is a rear diff brush by having a look under...

    Freelander 1 Tyre Query on 2005 TD4

Thanks Rob. It's interesting as I did do my usual search on landyzone when the knocking started and I suggested the rear diff bushes to the bloke at the garage..........he was dismissive and said it was the VCU...........given that the knocking has now gone would there still be knocking if it...

    Freelander 1 Tyre Query on 2005 TD4

Hi Rob, thanks for the input. The reason I took the car to the garage was there was an increasing knocking noise coming from the rear when the car changed gear. That got marginally worse over time so took it to the garage and the bloke advised that the VCU was on the way out so best to take the...
