    Rear Axle identification mystery

Yes, I noted the lip today. That makes sense. So, I don't need to worry about the lack of a sleeve. I can't locate a new mudshield 593610. Mine is OK although some of tabs have broken off. If I loctite the bolts, do you think that will be OK? Finally, some reliable answers - Thank you.

    Rear Axle identification mystery

Thats a relief, as that is what I ordered today. When I fit the seal, do you know whether it sits flush with the top of the inner hub, or should it be pushed down below the rim? Just to confirm, you think the axle is a up to June 1985 version? Do you know what the mention of a sleeve is all...

    Rear Axle identification mystery

Hi 10 years ago I bought a L/R 90 from a work colleague, a 1986 marque, professionally converted with a Defender 90 200 TDI engine and a Range Rover Classic rear axle (disc brakes,no ABS). The rear axle leaked oil when I acquired her, so I fitted new oil seals and bearings (oil seals FTC4785)...

Rear diff, pinion driven into crown wheel - why

Thank you to all who replied. There was a rumble on over-run, so I expect the bearing has simply failed. Ashcroft have a replacement diff on its way today, so by tomorrow evening, should all be sorted. It was reassuring to read your comments.

Rear diff, pinion driven into crown wheel - why

I was using the 90 to pull a tree out at the weekend, low ratio, in reverse. Job done, went to turn around (after engaging high ratio) and very strange sound coming from rear axle, and 90 had very strange motion as if lurching between cogs. So, diff out and the pictures tell the story. Now I...

Defender 90 front prop shaft gaiter

Is the gaiter always fitted on the front prop shaft? The reason I ask, is that, I ordered one as my prop shaft did not have one (and it looked as if it should), and when I came to fit it, the front jubilee clip is not large enough, which make me think 'perhaps is does not require one after...

    Hub cap identification

Hi I have had 2 attempts at purchasing a replacement hub cap, and on both occassions, got the wrong part! The front axle serial number fitted to my 1986 Defender 90 reads 22/094026. I am begining to think that perhaps the axle is from something other than a '90', hence I keep getting the wrong...

Whilst tub is off - rear suspension/axle

Just wondering whether it is worth replacing any 'difficult to replace' suspension/axle parts whilst the tub is off my Defender 90 (Chassis restoration project). I was thinking maybe top link bushes as these look well rusted in, and would be difficult once tub is back on - or do these never...

    Help with a part number

Hi I need help with a part number and or description. When I was removing the sill channel/floor support section on my defender, the front end was secured to the bottom end of the door pillar with 2 bolts, joined by a strip of metal. Mine were so rusty, they disintegrated! Can anyone help...

New chassis or wire brush and wax oil?

Hi again Following on from my earlier post, I have taken the tub off and exposed the chassis - doesn't look at all bad! I have exposed some rust in the front drivers footwell/bulkhead (see pics). The bulkhead is generally sound. What I am not sure of is whether the rust shown is classed as...

New chassis or wire brush and wax oil?

My 1986 90 Defender is causing me to think hard about options regarding its chassis. I have owned her for 5 years. She is mechanically very sound and has a Disco 200 TDI engine and a range rover rear axle, all fitted by the last owner. Body wise, the doors and batter box need attention but...
