My apologies, I evidently misunderstood your previous post, assuming when you said the ball was black that it was painted

English bull terrier, sorry but you are wrong about the tow ball. It has to be totally clean, including no paint. Any paint on the ball will contaminate the friction pads, as will any rust.

My 2001 TD4 tows my Swift Challenger 500 'van with no problems at all - totally stable at all times. I do have the correct Al-Ko compatible tow ball fitted, and also fitted new friction pads to the 'van hitch last year

Also watch out for garages where they don't realise that testing brakes on rollers is a no-no , Tapley meter only for FL's !!

Green Flag flatly refuse to tow any Freelander for any distance at all - apparently due to past problems when recovering by towing at customers' insistence (told to me by Green Flag recovery man when my lp pump failed)

I had to replace my left-hand piping a couple of years back - instead of trying to follow the route of the original piping, I brought the replacement up into the under bonnet area and clipped it across the inner edge of the bonnet slam panel. Much easier to fit, no problems at all

Doing mainly short journeys to work n back (couple of miles each way), and longer trips often have our caravan on tow - I'm getting 37-38 mpg under those conditions. Car is in standard trim, except for tyres - 205/75-15 Grabber AT2 instead of 195/80-15's. It is a 2001 TD4

Can't this "running away with itself" be caused by the crankcase breather filter having not been changed often enough (or at all) ??
