    Disco 2 Td5 - just the job..?

If you go for a D3 you will get more refinement and usable speed on the road. Go for one that has a full service history if possible, they are complicated beasts, and not much or no offroad use (although obviously they are excellent off the road). If you go for a D2, offroad ability is still a...

    D2 Who would buy another

I had one, pretty much everything that you read on here that could go wrong on it went wrong. It could have been used as a training vehicle for mechanics! Used to joke that with all the replaced parts on it, it was practically a new one. Sold it and got another, because I'm stupid. This one has...

    Coil Conversion

My last D2 was originally air then I had it converted to springs, the one I have now has springs from new. The springs aren't quite as good as air in that it's a little more choppy and obviously not as versatile, but really the difference is pretty small and things are fine in the bounce...

a little guidance on price please

Obviously condition is everything when considering price for a vehicle of this vintage these days. So only having a really good look in the flesh can determine what it's worth. Although I tend to agree that £1700 is too much. Perhaps he's asking that and expects to settle on a price around...

    Disco 1 or 2?

It's true, the D2's are more refined. The D1's are easier to fix. Both can be unreliable however and both have their different rot problems. They're both good off road. They're both only acceptable on the motorway, they'll both cost the debt of a small country to keep in fuel (unless it's...

    Disco 2 buying help

They are usually pretty reliable and when things go wrong, you can usually get home and sort it. If the starter motor just goes click, it's the solenoid connections inside - common problem and if you persist it'll start, but the problem gradually gets more frequent, so telling you it's time...

    Another stereo thread...

I know there's been a few stereo threads down the ages, but couldn't find the answer I wanted, so bear with me... I've got an 04 Disco 2 that has the 6500 Visteon CD/radio installed. The CD jumps more than a punk rocker at a gig, so I thought I'd change it. Just asking if anyone else has done...

Ooo this look a very nice D2

Maybe is a tad pricey. But it is a high spec and the mileage is low, and it is a retail sale from a garage and it looks to have been serviced regularly (for what that's worth). So a good buy for someone probably. I guess if you can afford to feed it, a few shillings more on the purchase price...

    Converting to coils

Slings and arrows? Not from me. Any disadvantages are far outweighed by the fit and forget springs. Much better than worrying when the next cash injection is needed and waking up to a Disco looking like a dog with worms scratching it's a*se on the carpet.

    Snow tyres

I agree with those that say in most parts of the UK we don't get conditions that really require snow or winter tyres, except perhaps for at most a fortnight. If you've got a good set of AT tyres on, then as a rule, they'll do. Even in that fortnight, in a Disco with AT tyres on, you'll still be...

Not starting , nearly dead battery.

Yes, it's a way to start the vehicle, not charge the battery. But it still holds true that you have to give it some time connected or it won't work, especially with crappy jump leads.

Not starting , nearly dead battery.

The Disco is a big old lump to start. If you do put jump leads on, it surely will take a bit of time and some revs before the Disco battery will have a proper go at starting. The batteries these days also don't tend to give much warning before packing up. One minute fine, the next time- click...

    Pulling all of a sudden..

...But you are right in that the brake calipers can stick, had this a couple of times on different Disco TD5's. If you think that's the case, beware they don't overheat. After a bit of a run, see if one of the front calipers is hot, that should give a good indication. If it's a caliper, then...

What is the black box under the passenger seat in my D2?

Hmm...if the Sony unit you've got is already amplified, I'm sure I've read somewhere, probably on here, that it could be problematical. Can't recall exactly, but the plugs behind the head unit may be different, there may be feedback or interference between the amp and the head unit and the...

    Reliability

I don't understand garages sometimes. You're obviously a new owner who may well give them some business, have made contact with them and this is how they make sure that you don't use them!

    tailgate wont open

Could well be electrical, but when it happened to me it was crud that had over a period built up in the mechanism. It gets up under the outside handle. As said above, use a thin bladed instrument to prise off the green oval and that gives you access to the working parts there. A liberal...
