Propshaft nut & bolt replacements - are they special?

Whitworth and BSF use the same tools (sockets and spanners),so if the nuts and bolts are BSF then whitworth spanners would be exactly right. BSF or British standard fine is in reality a version of BSW (British standard whitworth) with more threads per inch (TPI).. If however, the nuts and bolts...

Propshaft nut & bolt replacements - are they special?

Thanks for the advice. I've been asked to supply a prop shaft tool but the buyer insists the nuts/bolts are 5/16 whit (Possibly why he came to us as we specialise in Whit and BSF tools) From memory I though even on the early Land Rovers they were 9/16 AF. I can source long waisted sockets in...

Propshaft nut & bolt replacements - are they special?

Does anyone know if the earliest land rovers used whit nuts and bolts on the propshaft?. I'm told it is a 5/16 whit but need confirmation if possible before sending the tool off to Aus.

whats 1/4ww mean on a socket?

I've still got imperial tools that I use myself dating way back to my apprenticeship. Looking at them now its a bit sobering, all those years that have passed and all those firms that used to make the tools that are now just memories. A few still exist but they now (apart from one) just...

    Imperial/AF tools

Land rover traditionally hang on to 'obsolete' fixings. You can still find whitworth stuff on older models long after everyone else had stopped using it and the same with Imperial AF.

    3.5 V8 efficiency

I'd have thought that mpg was about right. I run a P5b,pretty much the same engine and weight but maybe a bit more aerodynamic and without the drag of the four wheel drive set up. it does around 17mpg with 20 on a gentle run.

Is their anything wrong with an 18mm socket?

18mm is virtually the same as 5/8 whitworth. In fact some sockets come marked 5/8 whit / 18mm. There are two whit sizes that have almost direct mm replacements 28mm being the other. Have a look at the conversion charts here

whats 1/4ww mean on a socket?

AF means across flats,so a 1/2 inch AF spanner is half inch across (open ended) for whitworth a 1/4 inch fits a bolt which has a 1/4 dia whitworth thread (same reasoning for BSF . There are two standards of whitworth as at the start of the second world war the bolt head sizes were dropped down...

Wynns Turbo Cleaner - any reviews?

Other than adding two stroke oil to get over the lack of lubrication of modern diesel I've not found many additives that make any real difference. Best of luck.

    Lt77 gearbox mounts.

Sorry,I didn't make things clear. This is a conversion on a spring set uo on a old Rover car,the mounts go in between the spring and the chassis. This is a conversion that was marketed some years back using mountings supposedly Land Rover gearbox ones.

    Lt77 gearbox mounts.

Hi James thanks for the answer,I bought some of those but the thickness is 37mm (seems a fairly common dimension on them) and thats just too thick to fit. They really need to be 32mm or under.

    Lt77 gearbox mounts.

I know this is joining in the discussion late but.......... I'm working on a project that uses what are supposed to be land rover gearbox mounts. They are approx 75mm in dia and just under 32mm in thickness,if anything they are slightly too large. The mounts are the old cotton reel type. All the...

Hello and question re engine/gearbox mounts

Hello Thanks but I'd already posted the same query some while back in the relevant section and didn't get a reply there either. I also posted the question on the transit owners forum and received six replies in two days.

Hello and question re engine/gearbox mounts

Hello I dont have a land rover at present,I've had plenty in the past though mainly early SWB. I have a question that I'm sure someone must know the answer to. I need some cotton reel mounts to replace some on a project. I was told they are early gearbox monunt. I bought some ANR1808 which...

    Series 2 gearbox mounts?

I'm doing a job on an old rover saloon.I'm trying to replace a couple of mounts, they look like normal bobbin engine mounts. They are 55mm in dia,two studs poke out of each end, they are approx 27mm thick. I'm told they are series 2 gearbox mounts but so far the only ones I can find whilst being...

    Veggie oil

Just for interest for a long time I've been running my old fairway taxi on diesel with two stroke oil added. The engine is quieter with it,the diesel rattle much less noticeable and it seems to run a bit smoother. I wonder if this would help an engine running veg to run a bit better, just a thought.
