    P38A Transmission Change

Well day 2 didn't go quite as well.... Got everything lined up, then found the torque convertor had slipped, so all needed to come out again. Back to the drawing board for a future weekend. Any tips of getting the torque converter lined up with the oil pump would be greatly appreciated.. I...

    P38A Transmission Change

Thanks. Lunch break, then out to give it a go. Have taken the round cover off the hoke in the bottom of the bell out a longer bolt in one of the holes, which stops the torque converter movjng more than about 3mm. Going to put the box in first, using engine hoist and strop round the back, and...

    P38A Transmission Change

Re-assembly question..... Is it best to bolt the torque converter on to the flex plate (attached to the engine), then slide the gearbox on? I can't see any other way. Or am I missing something, and the flex plate / flywheel should be able to come off the back of the engine?

    P38A Transmission Change

End of day one, and have the gearbox and transfer box out (took them out as one piece.) Replacements are currently separated, so question is... is it easier to put the gearbox and transfer bod back in together, or separately? Thanks to @jamesmartin for suggesting the use of an engine crane the...

    P38A Transmission Change

So today’s the day for finally swapping out the ZF22 gearbox on my P38. So far so good. Prop shafts removed, crossmember and exhaust section removed. Multiplugs and selectors disconnected. About to attempt taking the transfer box and gearbox out in one, using engine crane and jack for...

    P38A Preparing to swap transmission

Thanks all - just need a dry weekend to get the job done now. It's a straight swap of a ZF22 for a 22

    P38A Preparing to swap transmission

Cut up sleeper is a good call.... do you mean using an engine crane to support the transmission? i.e. through the car door and through the hole where the gear selector is? That hadn't crossed my mind until now.

    P38A Preparing to swap transmission

Sitting in my garage currently is a reportedly good ZF transmission, ready to swap on to my 1999 2.5 DSE. Are there any tips from anyone who has done this, or prep I should do up front? I'll be swapping out on the driveway, so will be up on axle stands with some breeze blocks under the chassis...

    P38A P38 Battery (Again)

Alphaline has been rebadged as Hankook - I bought one last week from these guys which fitted my P38 just fine, and arrived less than 24 hours after ordering (I can't remember if I paid extra for next day delivery or not) https://www.batterymegastore.co.uk/hankook-mf31-1000.html Item SKU Qty...

    P38A Gearbox Fault

Thanks all for assistance. Search is on now for a second-hand box to swap in. Sounds like an August Bank Holiday Weekend job.

    P38A Gearbox Fault

Are there any ECU / BECM gotcha's to watch out for, or is it literally a matter of finding a decent box to swap? On a side-note, I painted the outside of the sump with POR15 5 or 6 years ago - pretty pleased with how that's held up, as the acoustic cover hasn't been in place all that time...

    P38A Gearbox Fault

For the past 10 years, around every year, or 10,000 miles. Prior to that, I trusted garages to rip me off until I lost patience with them, signed up here, and started doing everything myself. First ATF change I did around 2008 looked like chocolate milkshake (I have a pic somewhere!), but since...

    P38A Gearbox Fault

I was just weighing up my options: Replace with a refurb box Replace with a second hand box Refurb existing box What's the difference between the 22 and 24? I seem to recall the bell housing is shorter, or something needs changed to fit? At the moment, I think my preference is to get a second...

    P38A Gearbox Fault

Ah, that makes sense, thanks. I'd been promising myself for about a year before it was parked up that I'd have the gearbox overhauled, as I'd started to notice a bit of slip from 1st to 2nd occasionally. Unfortunately we moved house beginning of last year, and I've got about a quarter of the...

I was pretty much assuming the next stop for that box will be Ashcroft to be honest.

What did you do with your Range Rover today

Fitted new battery and replaced spill-off pipes. Starts perfectly again. Changed ATF and filter. Gearbox now gone from dead to just very, very sick.

    P38A Gearbox Fault

Well progress of sorts... Replaced the filter, put in some fresh ATF and a bottle of Lucas wonderstuff... I've got good reverse in low range now, and can get forward in low range although it feels and sounds like riding the clutch. There was some unhealthy-looking sludge in the sump, but I've...

    P38A Gearbox Fault

Depends what you mean, and how I can test it? Moving the gearstick around results in the selected gear showing in the dash. Moving from high to low range gives the usual beeping for 2 or 3 seconds while it changes over (and I do keep it in neutral until it stops beeping!). There was a bit of a...

    P38A Gearbox Fault

New battery arrived today, so between that, and replacing all the spill-off pipes, she starts on the first turn :) Gearbox woes continue unfortunately - "Gearbox Fault" message has gone from the dash, but still no drive in any gear. Feels like at the biting point at some, but doesn't move...
