Will this suffice? Looks heavy duty enough to not flex as you warned. valve spring compresser tool | eBay

Thank you, I'll look out for something similar. Any pointers on that valve compression tool too? Much obliged.

    First time in the engine

Hence asking for a recommendation for one that is 'cheapest possible whilst it still being fit for the job'. Is it worth also buying a piston ring compressor tool or is it not too much bother to get the pistons back in without one? Hoping that if we get another week of sunshine I will finally...

    First time in the engine

Can anyone point me to a VALVE COMPRESSION TOOL that will be good for the job on this 2.25 petrol engine? I want the cheapest possible whilst it still being fit for the job. Thanks.

    First time in the engine

Hello mate, Sorry I never got back to you, I've had a number of priorities come up since you sent it and not been able to get it on. The vehicle's off the road now until I can get the head off - been waiting 6 weeks for this rain to stop and I'll finally start the job! Will let you know...

    First time in the engine

It puffs out like a miniature steam engine. I always thought I would remove the head anyway as the car is an unknown to me and I'm gaining confidence in it by systematically familiarising myself with it all, knowing that once I put it all back together it should give me trouble free motoring...

    First time in the engine

Righto dog, I'll check those things first. How would I test for pressure build up in the sump? If I take the oil filler cap off with engine running then it puffs exhaust fumes out. I don't know if that helps diagnosis at all?

    First time in the engine

Thank you James, most helpful in what I should be looking out for. Dog, nothing makes me think the block is cracked. I am just offering my understanding of possible scenarios once I'm in there. Sorry for missing your question: The engine runs, though very ropey and been getting progressively...

    First time in the engine

Thanks Dog. I have read the manuals (Haynes and the generally more helpful LR Workshop Manuals) so I have a fair idea of the steps I need to tackle. I don't have a valve compression tool so thanks for making a point of that. I'll definitely order one before I begin. I suspect that I will...

    First time in the engine

Good morning everyone, I am preparing to delve into my engine and thought I'd check in with some experts prior to messing it all up. First my questions... Q1. a) How long should I allow myself to get the bits apart and get to a stage where I can see what's going on? b) How long should...

What could happen to a knackered engine?

I guess it is to the old boys credit that he has still been driving around as well as he has when I look at those compression figures. I am just trying to get the owner up to speed quickly enough to do him justice and keep him going for another 40 years :)

What could happen to a knackered engine?

So what are likely worst case scenarios for valve problems or blown head gaskets?

What could happen to a knackered engine?

It's been going through oil (both spitting it out from the engine and probably burning it too), smoking slightly and never really clearing, loss of power, struggles to turn over etc. I just bought a compression tester and put that on it and got the following: Cylinder 1 - 130psi Cylinder 2 -...

What could happen to a knackered engine?

What are the consequences of driving an engine that is close to packing up? I think my engine could be considered on its last legs, however, it still drives at the moment and I use it for small errands. Am I stupid to continue driving it as I try to tick jobs off on it or should I be very wary...

    Compression Tester near Bracknell?

Hello all, Just wondering if anyone local(ish) to Bracknell has a compression tester that I could check my Series 3 (petrol 2.25) with? I'd be happy to drive over, beer in hand, if someone can just let me hook it up for a minute or two :D Cheers, Andy.

Borris, is this one still going?

    Poor ignition/bad connections?

How's this for part of my electrical issues (whilst running): The bonnet prop which was loose was touching the positive battery terminal whilst running and causing major stuttering and stalling (in addition eventually to sparks flying through my air vents). I'd been driving for about 5 miles...

    Poor ignition/bad connections?

Probably related... My Alt light is staying on as well. At higher revs it dulls and almost goes off but 'never' goes fully out, at idle it is on very brightly. Alternator been replaced and it's connections cleaned up when done 6 months ago.

    Poor ignition/bad connections?

Good morning All, Well, the first bit of damp weather and my starting problem has re-emerged. Same problem I had on/off last year where she turns over and I can hear the solenoid clicking away but no firing. Fires fine in dry weather. I suspect a problem with connections as I have fully...

Donations from the back of the garage?

Ah yes, why allow such things as reading the thread properly and understanding the facts get in the way of a good old fashioned superficial condemnation! Do you live in the Bible belt by any chance. :5bbanghead: ...bored now
