    Standard height 110???

Is there a way of determining what normal standard height is for a 110? Like a standard gap at the bump stops? I've just bought and fitted standard height yellow Britpart Heavy duty spring all round - previous springs were a lift at the back, not sure about the front. It wasn't sagging when...

    Rear brakes clattering

130 mile round trip yesterday... NO clattering, not ever, not once. I even coasted down a couple of hills to listen out for it. The Flintstones supermarket trolley is finally silenced! CONCLUSION - genuine pads and shims solved the problem. I hope I won't be back next week saying it's started...

    Rear brakes clattering

I'll do some pics when I get a chance - BUT meanwhile I fitted the genuine pads, with shims... and the clattering has totally gone. I've only driven about 30 miles since but so far there isn't the slightest hint of any noise. All the clattering pads were AP Lockheed (Delphi) and Mintex, none...

    Rear brakes clattering

The whole axle isn't the correct one for my vehicle, as it's a later axle - came with brakes on it, no particular reason to think they weren't the original brakes for that axle. It used to be fine until I had to re-furb the axle, I had to replace the hubs cos the drive flange threads had...

    Rear brakes clattering

The latest: I've got some genuine pads with bonded anti-squeal shims plus separate backplates, the ones with half moon cut outs, I've fitted those but haven't driven it yet. They do seem a tighter fit so I'm hopeful they'll stop it clattering. I was getting really ****ed off with it - two...

    Rear brakes clattering

... So I got new bolts, a new bottle of threadlock, put it all back together with proper torques etc... and it clattered like a pair of demented castanets, all over France for two weeks. Today I fitted a new disc, there's still a hint of clicking, nowhere as bad as before but still faintly...

    Rear brakes clattering

Gonna get some threadlock tomorrow, a set of new bolts is already in the post, so yeah I'm not intending to do any miles with it as it is, I just put it all back together cos I didn't want to leave the carnage out on the drive overnight!

    Rear brakes clattering

New hub from Rimmer... perfect! I considered going genuine but this is a cheapie at £60-odd. Runout at the edge of the disc is now just under 0.1mm, strangely it's almost nil at the hub outer edge... I was hoping for better than that on the disc but now that the brake pads aren't moving about...

    Is there a Paris LEZ?

Just to answer my own question, in case anyone happens to stumble on this post... no landies allowed in Paris, and not even my diesel car is allowed in Paris! I didn't quite manage to make sense of the Euro ratings but what's clear from a couple of "check your vehicle" sites is that of my two...

    Rear brakes clattering

Well, I can clearly see the pads shifting side to side, and at a certain speed it sort of grabs them and bashes them against the inside of the caliper, even after cleaning the disc. I think initially some residue cleaner lubes the contact so the pads behave but as soon as it's evaporated the...

    Rear brakes clattering

OK... sadly there's a whole other instalment to this! I went to clean the discs off again, started with the NS which seems to be the one still clattering albeit now only occasionally. With the disc cleaned and new pads in there, I gave it a spin to have a quick look at it running - MASSIVE...

    Rear brakes clattering

Yes definitely, I was thinking that - the first application of the brakes just manoevring out the drive would have deposited a greasy pad-print on the discs. I've got another new set here, should have put them in when the wheels were off...

    Rear brakes clattering

Having done a round trip of about 20 miles, it's almost totally cured! At around 30mph on overrun there's still a hint of clatter, I can only just hear it on overrun when the engine's slightly quieter and it only does it at that speed. Otherwise it's silent, graceful, and thoroughly relaxing...

    Rear brakes clattering

Ok, I may be rejoicing too soon... but I think it's CURED!!! :) And it's REALLY stupid - I've simply cleaned the discs off with standard brake cleaner. I noticed while holding a dry rag against the turning disc that the friction was pulsing really badly, but as soon as I'd cleaned it with the...

    Rear brakes clattering

Have you checked the run-out? And cleaned off the discs with proper brake cleaner? The calipers can't be causing movement of the pads, but I suppose must be allowing too much movement by having too much leeway around them. I'm going to give the discs a good clean with brake cleaner today and...

    Rear brakes clattering

Sadly the discs on mine are brand new, they still haven't quite worn off the machining marks. Makes it even more annoying! You can probably grind the lip off old discs, I did this with the previous discs on mine and they were quite good after that... I only had to change them cos after a long...

    Rear brakes clattering

Three sets in a row were too loose... so either I find different pads, or different calipers! Or add a bit of weld on the edges of the pads and grind them back down to a snug fit? Seems strange to need to do that but it's the only way I can think of.

By the way, thanks for all the replies - I really appreciate it, even if I don't ever manage to sort this out!!

    Rear brakes clattering

Two sets ago (Mintex) squealed like mad so yes I've done the copper grease thing ever since then. I've chocked the front wheels and taken a back wheel off each side in turn and put it in gear to watch the hub turning, the pads do move about a bit, obviously I can't apply the brake while it's on...

    Rear brakes clattering

I'm envious! Do you by any chance know the part number of yours? These here are STC1601AP. The last two lots have been exactly the same dimensions and I've got another spare set, also the same. I remember thinking there was a lot of movement within the cavity so I checked the previous pads and...
