Yet another VCU thread - with a what would you do?

Good call. I got one from Freelander Spares UK a while back, IIRC Bell were out of stock and I was impatient. Turned out to be a leaky hunk of junk and the warranty was completely useless. They wouldn't even answer my emails. Bell for me next time :)

    Injector removal tool

I buy stuff from Halfords occasionally. It's about the same in there! Happy to buy the tool from somewhere else but this is the only one I've seen, it looks right but I'd like to be sure.

Smoking engine (under bonnet, not exhaust)

Had a look with a torch and it seems to be coming from where the red arrow is. It was fairly thin so not easy to trace. There's an ali housing on the end of the side of the engine, seemed to be under that but hard to tell. Smelt a bit acrid. Pretty strong smell, not one I recognised.

Smoking engine (under bonnet, not exhaust)

Getting a lift in a friend's TD4 and when we got to my house there was a bit of smoke coming out from under the bonnet so we popped it up and had a look. Seemed to be coming from under and behind the right hand side of the engine but we couldn't see anything. Not thick smoke, just a little bit...

Opening the rear hatch door with no power.

There's a connector under the trim inside the door just over the RH rear wheel. You can put 12v there to make it go up and down. It'll be a bit tricky to get to without the opening the door.

Battery light on when cold and wet

Just had a couple of early starts and while it was cold and damp the battery light stayed on. It went off over about 3000 revs but stayed on the rest of the morning. There's was a bit of a burning smell (a bit clutch-like), too. Any ideas? Slipping belt maybe? How do I get in there?

    Freelander rear window not operational.

Mine rubbed on the inside of the door and wore through a wire. It was a bit tucked behind but visible with a bit of poking around. There's a connector inside the boot near the door hinge. A meter here should give you and idea of which end of the system might be faulty.

    Hot vcu advice please !

A tired VCU won't make a noise, it'll put more strain on the rear diff and IRD so any wear in these will be be more noticeable (and be getting worse :()

    Any good deals on tyres?

Time for two new front tyres. I'll probably get 4 as the rears are nearly there anyway. Anybody seen any good deals out there? About £110 a corner from blackcircles

    Hot vcu advice please !

Slightly different sized tyres will mean the VCU has to do some work on the straights, especially at speed. If the VCU fluid is starting to get old it will put a lot more strain on the IRD and rear diff and cause premature tyre wear. If the VCU has never been replaced 57k might be a good time to...

Ominous bearing/droning noise from transfer box

Just had tmy '03 TD4 in for an MOT (Just new wiper blades for a pass). Its recently developed an ominous bearing/droning noise, sounds like a wheel bearing. I mentioned this to the mechanic when I dropped it off and he said he'd have a look. His diagnosis is that the noise is definitely coming...

    Replacement ignition keys for Freelander

If you want a really cheap option... Get some keys cut at the local key cut shop for a couple of quid then stick the proper key with the immobiliser inside the steering column housing (cut the key bit off for extra security if you want). Obviously you lose the immobiliser security, is that worth...

Water, how deep is too deep?

We found a rather long ford while out in our '03 Freelander TD4. I walked along the raised pavement, it started pretty shallow but went to a bit over a foot so we went for it... 3 times. Good fun. That got me to thinking what is the max depth? (something I probably should have known before :D)...
