I was told that the firing voltage is higher when running on gas than on petrol (by the LPG bloke) and sure enough, the new leads had it running luvvly with nothing else touched, so maybe someone who knows about firing voltages could fill us in on that?

Tyre repairs require you to have access to the inside, so not a viable option

Good point, that's why I tested it running, with everything switched on, still the voltages were good in each case, and of course it had done 850 miles mostly with the lights on and been started up countless times, no flat battery, so I figured the <alternator fault> was probably not being...

When I had my 4.6 LPG'd it didn't run well until I had Magny Cours put on it, after that it ran smooth as silk.
