Hi, looking for a bit of help! My 4.6 P38 is still appears to have a misfire/pinking which is most noticable when revved hard from 3k upwards, I've changed plugs and leads on spec and put some lead testers between leads and plugs to check out the coil pack. All of the testers are illuminating...

I'll go there tommorow and see if they can check it out! I'm ok at car mechanics, but rubbish at electrics!!! Do you think its a blown bulb for the battery indicator, that should be lighting due regardless of the alternator playing up, shouldn't it? Thanks again!

I think l'll be visiting the local auto electrician to check out the alternator. I've had a voltmetre across it and it appears ok but I think I need an expert to confirm my findings. On a similiar thread, my battery warning light doesn't illuminate at key pos 2, I'm pretty sure it should but...

It doesn't feel too bad when you put your foot down. I think Ill unplug the MAF tommorow and see if it gets better or worse. The miss is only really noticable at about 4-5k rpm, the idles a bit lumpy, but never feels like its going to stall. Could this all be linked to a dodgy alternator or 2...

if it helps, the idle doesn't feel that smooth at the moment either. :(

battery checks out good, built in indicator says batterys good, and my optimate battery charger agrees. Earth seems clean and tight so hopefuly can rule that out! I was expecting my P38 to be expensive, but mainly on petrol! Wasn't expecting to spend every waking moment under the car and...

starting to feel like a proper P38 owner ie neverending issues, replaced front diff and drive shaft, sorted! Now it appears I've got some other issues. Occasionaly the 'check alternator' warning displays, and now the rpm indicator occasionally takes a while to start reading!?! I'm guessing they...

Just taken mine off too to replace broken drive shaft and crunched front diff! They were 19mm on mine, looked star headed but my Halford Pro 19mm 1/2" set undid them no problems and I can assure you they needed quite a bit of force to get them to budge!!!!

Got the hub and drive shafts out, the spline drive had sheared off the nearside drive shaft!!!:eek: That'd explain the racket from the front diff!! I drained the oil out of the front diff, all 200ml or so of it!!:eek: Only a litre and a half short!! I've got a replacement drive shaft so no...

I've had a good look and they feel tight and smooth, but like you say, while the shafts off they're probably worth doing.

Thanks for all your help. Got a complete diff overhaul kit (4 bearings and oil seal) from Ashcroft transmissions. Thanks for all the advice too, the input shaft wobbles about in the front diff so is definatley the culprit! Just need to get it all to bits now!

Thanks for your help. On closer inspection it appears that all the play is where the forward uj bolts onto the flange on the front axle, ie the play is not in the uj, but on the shaft that goes into the front axle!:eek: Does anybody know if this is an easy fix or tricky or is it a replacement...
