    Camshaft swop

Can you swap camshafts between different 1.8 k Freelander engines - are they all the same ? I note that the cam carrier is unique to each head but I can't see anything regarding camshafts.

    Head Bolts retensioning/torquing

I fully understand the principle of stretch bolts. I was just very surprised that the bolts turned quite easily.

    Head Bolts retensioning/torquing

If the bolts stretch that easily then it may be a cause of some of the problems. There are a number of manufacturers of these bolts & it makes me wonder if they are all to the same spec. It's not that I got another 20 degrees. It's the fact that it required surprisingly little effort compared...

    Head Bolts retensioning/torquing

So, as an experiment, I tried giving the head bolts a tweak. I was amazed that it was pretty easy to give them about 20 degrees with a cold engine. The effort required felt less than when I originally torqued them. I am now wondering if I should of backed them off to just below the initial...

    Head Bolts retensioning/torquing

Presumably the head/block expand more than the bolts.

    Head Bolts retensioning/torquing

A friend of mine, who is ex Landrover, has said that if he suspected a HGF he would tweak the headbolts ie tighten them a bit more - say 20 degrees. I have also read of people doing the same. So, out of interest, are the headbolts at maximum tension when the engine is hot or cold ?

Level in coolant bottle - overheating

No I bypassed the radiator which is just as bad !. Thanks to a poster I realised that, because the stat has no internals, I needed to carefully clamp the bypass hose. Now the engine runs fine with no overheat but still with a surprisingly quick warm up. Yes I will get a new stat & thanks for...

Level in coolant bottle - overheating

New type, in line, now with the internals removed so basically an open Y tube. Yes the liners were OK - but they might not be now  I am tempted to put in some K Seal - nothing to lose if the head is coming off anyway. It seems as if water is being pumped out of the top hose & back via...

Level in coolant bottle - overheating

Yes I spent yesterday removing the pump & praying that it was faulty :D. But it is fine. There are no other signs of HGF, no mayo, no coolant loss etc but after changing two since I've had it, I know that this isn't proof.

Level in coolant bottle - overheating

It will idle all day with the cap off & the temp/coolant levels stay normal. Eventually the bottom hose will heat up but it takes for ever. Take it for a run & it overheats quickly, the bottle fills & the bottom hose stays cold. Once you release the, I am assuming vacuum, in the bottle the...

Level in coolant bottle - overheating

This is getting stranger by the minute !. I have removed & checked the water pump & it is fine. There is no sign of exhaust gasses in the coolant & the thermostat & fan are working. So after about 10 minutes of running the engine overheats. The bottle fills with coolant & the temp rises to...

Level in coolant bottle - overheating

Yes jiggle pin was free. I don't fancy drilling out the jammed bleed screw & re-tapping.

Classic Landrover - which one to buy

I know what they are like - I used to drive one a lot during the seventies ! I won't be in the market for a while but I love the idea of saving so much money & being able to smile at Garda checkpoints :D I suspect that I would be best off buying the nicest condition rather than focussing on a...

Level in coolant bottle - overheating

There wasn't meant to be two threads !. I thought that it would be easier for others doing a search in the future if I asked separately about testing the pump. It seems like an obvious thing to check but no obvious way of doing it.

    Freelander 1.8 water pump

Only the top hose. It's crazy that the two pipes going in the top of the stat are hot & the one at the bottom (bottom rad hose) is stone cold. Clearly the water is not flowing through the rad. Today I disconnected the rad hoses & flushed though the block & rad with a hose. I then refilled...

    Freelander 1.8 water pump

Wouldn't the top hose heat up anyway just by convection. I have a rad full of water, no leaks, a working stat, the system is thoroughly bled but the bottom hose is stone cold. I have seen a few people post the same symptoms & I have never seen an answer.

    Freelander 1.8 water pump

You will see from another thread that I am trying to determine why my bottom hose is staying cold. I thought that it might be useful for others if there is a method for testing whether the water pump is pumping correctly. As well as impellers falling off I have heard of cases where the...

What's the best way of testing if the impeller is still on the pump ?

Classic Landrover - which one to buy

Yes I would like to find a cherished example preferably with a galvanised chassis :D My Freelander is a piece of crap but, at 12 years old, it is pretty much rust free.
