    Wheel resistance

So guys, just wanted to say thanks. It was the wheel bearings, the front offside was completely mangled. Eventually got them out and replaced them with Timken. Everything seemed fine going back together until I put the nearside wheel on and as soon as I tighten the wheel nuts the hub starts...

Fingers crossed that was the main issue. I’ll see when the new tool arrives!!

    Wheel resistance

    What does it tell me?

    Wheel resistance

Yes, oil came out when I removed the retaining screw on the fwh’s. There is also oil in the front diff when I checked. I did wonder how the oil in the fwh was replaced. I’m seeing if anyone local has the box spanner and if not I’ll go with the eBay cheapo and see what happens from there...

    Wheel resistance

So today, eventually got the FWH off (after slipping with a spanner hitting myself in the face resulting in a nosebleed)!!! The hub still really struggles to turn manually however the stub axle (I think it’s called) does seem to turn quite smoothly by hand, it will also pull out and in by...

    Wheel resistance

If I engage 4wd with yellow lever down and manually turn the front prop, the front offside hub still doesn’t turn but the rear prop and both rear wheels do however every few rotations I seem to get slight resistance on the rear nearside wheel as it gets tougher to spin. Should the steering not...

    Wheel resistance

If I engage the fwh’s but still leave the transfer box in 2wd and rotate the front prop only the nearside hub rotates. Again no noise or grouchiness

    Wheel resistance

In 2wd I can easily spin the front prop by hand but neither front hub rotates and there’s no real noise or ‘grouchines’.

    Wheel resistance

Ok, I’m back on it with a couple of hours to try some diagnostics from everyone’s advice. 1) with all four wheels on axle stands in 2wd rear wheels drive pretty much as they should. As soon as 4wd is engaged and the front hubs are locked the fronts really struggle to turn and I don’t want to...

    Wheel resistance

With the vehicle on axle stands, engine/handbrake off and not in gear the rear wheels turn easily and for some reason even the rear nearside wheel seems to be turning without the slight resistance it had when I first jacked it up. When turning the rear wheels by hand the prop doesn’t turn and...

    Wheel resistance

With the risk of sounding really thick I haven’t yet took the front wheels and hubs off yet as thought I’d check if there were any obvious simple explanations/checks before I started taking things apart!! I’m 100% sure that it wasn’t being driven in 4wd and hubs were also free wheeling in 2wd...

    Wheel resistance

Thanks for the response and apologies for the delay (working nights)!! The rear wheels in neutral can both be rotated by hand but the rear offside is slightly stiffer every few rotations as if it’s meeting some minor resistance. This ties in with the engine running in 1st (wheels off ground)...

Thanks for the prompt replies both...I’ll try this over the holiday period and see what happens.

    Wheel resistance

Hi all, a few months ago I bought a 1974 series 3. The vehicle had been rebuilt by a previous owner a couple of years ago and seemed in pretty good condition. I’ve done a few cosmetic upgrades but have little or no mechanical knowledge. Anyway, whilst merrily driving along at around 40mph a...
