oh ok, dare I ask what the ££ damage / rectification work might be if that's the case? And would I still be ok to drive it for about 30mins to go see the guy who did the service?

that makes sense, I noticed the dipstick wasn't pushed home when I first got to it

just checked, looks bob on to me. Although I did notice quite a bit of oil against the side of the water bottle, and sat on top of the chassis down low.

ok, just found it! it was.... TRIPLE QX 15W-40 hope that was right :rolleyes:

Thanks all, this is great advice. The work was done by a local independent guy who works from home but does have a good reputation with LRs. I provided the oil and filters, but did get them as an official Defender service kit from eurocarparts so hope it was the right grade oil (!?)...

Hi guys, recently had my 90 serviced, it's a 300tdi model but seems to have been fitted with a 200tdi engine and gearbox. Since it's been serviced the engine sounds a lot more rattly, and I smell smoke in the interior a lot. On the first drive after the service the oil light would flicker...
