Had a guy at work look at it and the driver's side bulb mounting has scorch marks and a melted area. Couldn't get a new bulb into the mounting. Abandoned theory about the stalk.

Thanks, I didn't know the main beam indicator did that! I should be able to change bulbs today, and even swap out the relay, but I'm not confident of sourcing a new stalk locally today. Plenty from broken cars on fleabay but not with fitting instructions.

My 97R 300Tdi takes at least 3 miles for the needle to start to move, never goes higher than 1/4 up the gauge, and the heater never really gets warm. Just something else on the growing list of things that need fixing!

I get 360 to a £90 tank full (97R 300Tdi ES auto) but its longest run with me has been about 60 miles, it does a 15 mile round trip most days and tows 1800kg 20-30 miles most weekends. It's about the same as my old Volvo 940 2.3 auto did, sad but true.

Exhaust gas recirculator, do a search at the top of the page (or Google) and there is a lot of information about them. The blanking plate is to divert the route of the exhaust gases. I'm no mechanic and will get one fitted by someone who knows... Here is a link to more info...
