No, not the 'you hum it and I'll play it' kind...!

97R 300Tdi auto, 128K miles. Starts ok (except Monday morning, had to charge it for a couple of hours). Has only done short runs, less than 10 miles, all this week. Today it started making a noise when revs go over 2500, only when moving, so there's nothing unusual to hear when the bonnet's lifted. Sounds like a kind of a high-pitched whistly hum (my son said it sounds like a hairdryer!). Not using oil or water/coolant, and it isn't overheating - at least, if the indicator is accurate. The temp gauge never goes more than 1/4 high, and takes several miles to start moving at all.

Sod's law it happens late Friday afternoon. It's an unusually free weekend so was going to get it in for badly needed new tyres (££££). It needs rear discs (£££), it's overdue for a timing belt, and if this noise indicates something major (£££££) then it will have to take priority over those and the tyres. Great car, not so great bank balance. Daren't take it 10 miles to the tyre place tomorrow, when I can't get the engine looked at until midweek.

Funny the boiler only ever breaks down at weekends too...:(
