I had the same problem a while back. I ended up by connecting the speedo end first whilst slowly turning the gearbox end with a battery drill, once the speedo was registering I connected up the gearbox. I half expected it to dislodge again but have had no more problems.

It is possible to do. I have done it on my 1979 series 3. Trouble is I don't remember exactly how I did it.:confused: I don't recall it being too difficult though.

My problems usually turn out to be the rear brakes. For a quick check I clamp the flexible hydraulic pipe linking front to back if this gives me a hard pedal then at least I have proven half the system. I did once fit the shoes incorrectly, the clue was that the adjusters ran out of adjustment...

Thanks G-MAN they look just the ticket . I did think that it was easier to lift without the spare wheel. I did notice that the weight made a bit of slack on the bonnet release catch and wondered if this could cause the problem. Without the weight the catch is tight.

I think that the type I need are possibly the rubber type (but I'm open to any advice) I did wonder about the bonnet lifting whilst being driven when I can hardly lift it. But I have been assured that it happens

Mine do work well but need an incredible amount of pressure. I thought that this was normal untill I drove the short wheel base. It has passed the mot twice with them like this.
