Some help for a new owner? Leaky fuel pump on a Series 3

Cheers both! Took it for a spin and white smoke cleared after a while, although I could just make out some black some on heavy load. Any issues with that? Also thanks for the tip on revving while stationary, i will keep that in mind. I couldn't hear an obvious knock, but keen to get this...

Some help for a new owner? Leaky fuel pump on a Series 3

Cheers for the continuing advice all! I seem to have made some progress... I advanced the fuel pump past where I had previously to about 5mm past timing line and the smoke is reduced (Hurrah!). However, I can now hear a high pitched tap, most noticeable on tick-over. Have I advanced it too far...

Some help for a new owner? Leaky fuel pump on a Series 3

Check! Injectors reconditioned/ reset and bores checked for old washers, then refitted with proper spec copper washers and steel crush washers, corrugated side uppermost and dowels tightened down to specified torque. So can a worn pump be giving too much fuel, causing white smoke? If so, any...

Some help for a new owner? Leaky fuel pump on a Series 3

Cheers everyone, sorry for the absence, I didn't know there were replies! I have still yet to make the time to try moving the pump further over, but it's on the list as I realised there were no crush washers in the injector housings... so had to sort that first. Can anyone point me in the right...

Some help for a new owner? Leaky fuel pump on a Series 3

Hi Both, Many thanks for the replies. So if I'm reading right, you're saying just to try increasing the pump timing further to see if it works? My injectors have just been reconditioned so they shouldn't be an issue, which leaves me with a potential faulty fuel pump, fuel pump timing, or an...

Some help for a new owner? Leaky fuel pump on a Series 3

Not sure if this thread will revive, but I've just started tinkering with this ole girl again and come to trying to solve the heavy, constant smoking and misfire issue. I advanced the pump timing a lines width past the mark and it didn't seem to improve (Was this enough or is any further too...

Series 3 Sender unit/ Fuel gauge issues

Unfortunately they are both reading max at about the 1/2 way mark... Meaning for the most part, needles are hiding under the covering. Frustrating thing is that I've spoken to Richfields and they reckon that re-calibrating them is possible, but more expensive then purchasing new ones. They...

    Bulkhead for a Series 3 109.

Alright, I've gotten some pictures of my rot. Well, what we can see anyway! Does these spell the end for this piece of bodywork? If not, how would you go about making cuts and welds neatly right on such small bits of metalwork on the front of the vehicle?

Series 3 Sender unit/ Fuel gauge issues

New gauge arrived yesterday, fingers and toes were crossed! Part was guaranteed working so even though the contacts looked a little grimy I just thought i'd throw it in and see what happened. This time, the gauge went straight up to 1/2 full tank from both senders... I knew that wasn't right as...

    Bulkhead for a Series 3 109.

Wow, thanks for all the advice guys! I'll take some snaps of the rot and see whether you think it's repairable then, considering the issues you've raised with things not fitting @LincolnSteve

    Bulkhead for a Series 3 109.

Now then, I’ve got a Military 1972 Series 3 109, with a 2 1/4 Ltr Diesel engine. My Bulkhead Is very, very draughty... Think it’s beyond repair, or if it isn’t, I’d certainly prefer to work on a replacement then swap out to fix it! My question is that When buying a replacement Bulkhead, would...

Series 3 Sender unit/ Fuel gauge issues

Thanks for the link, the vendor is guaranteeing that the part is fully operational, so I've bought it and will see if it fixes the issue! I also happen to have then spin on oil filter type anyway, so can start to look into that. More news to fllow!

Series 3 Sender unit/ Fuel gauge issues

Very interesting! Thanks for the insight ExMil. As it turns out, my Oil Temp Gauge reads 0 Because it has been disconnected. Looks like a new sump has been fitted in the past that doesn't support a thermostat... At least that's 1 mystery solved. Anyway back onto the Fuel Gauge issue. So I've...

Series 3 Sender unit/ Fuel gauge issues

Grand, I’m just In the process of removing the Dash to try and find where the earth goes. After that I’ll send it off. In the mean time I have some more questions! Does anyone know where I can get another one of these brackets? (Below) One is missing from the Speedo, meaning that all 3...

Series 3 Sender unit/ Fuel gauge issues

Hi all, Thanks again for the fantastic help you have all been so far... Time for a further installation of the Fuel gauge saga! I have now dismantled the instruments and given them a good clean, although the inside was actually in great condition. In addition, I have cleaned all contacts which...

Series 3 Sender unit/ Fuel gauge issues

Rightio, I’ve hooked up the sender to the gauge out of tank and earthed. As soon as the sender connect to the circuit, the gauge goes right up to full. I have tried this with a number of wires and earths to be sure... it seems that regardless of the configuration, as soon as the gauge finds a...

Series 3 Sender unit/ Fuel gauge issues

Do you mean a new wire right through to the gauge? I’m running new wires from the sender to earth and to where the gauge wire normally meets the switches for testing purposes

Series 3 Sender unit/ Fuel gauge issues

New senders arrived (Wahoo) But the issues continue! When connecting earthed sender to the fuel gauge, with the rod where empty would be, the gauge reads just under 'F'. When pulling the rod up to where full would be, the gauge moves up slightly to 'F'. When returning the rod to where empty...

Ah! Well there you have it, 12V system it is :) I've purchased some new senders so will see if that has the desired effect. Thanks for the advice on the oil temp gauge, will take a look into that asap! Cheers, Nick

Series 3 Sender unit/ Fuel gauge issues

Thanks Mega, I will give that a try today, I just didn't want to break anything! (Edit.... Whoops, it was a pig and after ages of persuasion I got the spindle to pop through, followed by the screwdriver I was using to apply pressure. Swiftly snapped one of the contacts inside! Lesson learned)...
