Series 3 - Angle of steering column as it exits bulkhead

Wow, thanks David - yes that looks to be exactly the same angle as mine. And I see what you mean about “Holy!”

Series 3 - Angle of steering column as it exits bulkhead

Thank you to everyone that replied to this thread. I had a chance to look at another S3 today (albeit one with a servo, which mine does not have) and I'm relieved to say that the steering column was at a similar angle to that shown in my original photos. I'll be sure to post here again with an...

Thank you David, that would set my mind at rest.

Series 3 - Angle of steering column as it exits bulkhead

That’s a good tip, I’ll do that, thank you. And I know what you mean about the ball joints taking up any discrepancy.

Series 3 - Angle of steering column as it exits bulkhead

Ha, no I don’t know that it wasn’t like that before but I’d like to be as sure as I can be be. This is my first job of this scale (at the moment the front axle, steering relay etc are also waiting to be reattached ) so I don’t want to make things worse if I can help it :)

Series 3 - Angle of steering column as it exits bulkhead

Thanks for the photos but it’s really hard to tell. I think I’m going to have to have a look under someone’s bonnet, as I just can’t tell for sure - but I still cannot work out for the life of me what can have happened. The car hasn’t been moved since removal.

Series 3 - Angle of steering column as it exits bulkhead

I haven't actually done any major work on the bulkhead - just some cleanup and repair of minor holes in the footwell. Thanks for offering to take a look in the morning - it's appreciated.

Series 3 - Angle of steering column as it exits bulkhead

Thanks for your input. There is no lateral adjustment on the bulkhead bracket - the main part of the bracket screws directly into two holes in the bulkhead - fixed position - and the secondary two-part bracket only has u-shape vertical slots for minor vertical adjustment.

Series 3 - Angle of steering column as it exits bulkhead

Thank you for the pictures. When I saw your first photo I thought "good", as that is what mine looks like but then I read your comment :( If your suspicion is correct then I have no idea what the hell has happened - as I have not changed anything on the chassis, bulkhead, or toe box...

Series 3 - Angle of steering column as it exits bulkhead

Thanks for your reply - as you say it's hard to see from your photos will everything in there. Looking closely though (unless it's wishful thinking) I think yours angles as well - at least that's what i'd guess from the angle of the bracket holding the steering box. Hopefully, someone will be...

Series 3 - Angle of steering column as it exits bulkhead

Forgot to say: The bracket holding the steering box is not bent or twisted, and neither is the chassis.

Series 3 - Angle of steering column as it exits bulkhead

Hi, I've been refitting my steering box on my 77 Series 3 after nearing 2 years of it being off the vehicle. I've only finger tightened some bolts so far but I have noticed that the steering column and box appear to be at quite an offset/angle - it's noticeable when standing in front of the...

Series 3 Possible to fit a remote brake booster on non-servo diesel S3?

Hi Does anyone know whether it’s possible to fit a remote brake booster (something like the eBay link below) to a non-servo, single circuit, diesel Series 3...

Series 3 Advice for welding of front bump stop plate

Thanks Kev12, I had taken a look around and had seen the various replacement cross members and extensions but not seen any specific to that part of the chassis around the bump stop plates. The short "extension cap" https://www.sp-4x4.com/product_p/lr29-3.htm might be something I could use to...

Series 3 Advice for welding of front bump stop plate

Hi I'm after some advice about how to go about welding/replacing the bump stop plates on my wife’s S3 ‘77; these are the plates which have slightly curved ends, sit in the underside of the front member and are flanked by brackets on either side of the front member (onto which the bump stops...

Series 3 Steering Relay - Replacement tube to weld into in chassis?

Hi So, after a few lockdown weekends worth of jacks, club hammers, mallets, PlusGas, crowbars, blow torches, mini hacksaw blades, mini files and coffee, I have finally removed the steering relay from my wife’s 77 S3. The relay is damaged beyond repair - it has a hole at the bottom of the...

Series 3 instrumental panel - ID this bulb please

Yes, on our diesel it is the low fuel light. It’s a mauve colour. Ours had faded to near white so I coloured it in with a dark mauve Sharpie - and it looks perfect.

Series 3 instrumental panel - ID this bulb please

Thanks all for all the replies so far. I do have a trailer hitch but haven’t had a chance to test it or trace the wiring back so potentially it is a repeater for that - but it would be nice to see it mentioned on a diagram somewhere... they do all seem to ignore it. Like most, my wiring has...
