Series 3 Rebuild Series 3 Suffix B gearbox as Suffix D

I have a very tired Series 3 Suffix B gearbox. I sourced it out of a paddock, emptied the water out, cleaned it up and rebuilt it, it works after a fashion, but it really needs a good going over and a lot of new parts. Can anyone tell me, if I am replacing basically all of the innards, can I...

Series 3 Wiring Diagram in CAD format, not PDF

Does anyone have a CAD copy of a Series wiring diagram? I am rewiring my S3, want to document my changes and it'd be great to be able to start with something, rather than from scratch. DWG or DXF formats preferably, but I daresay I could convert most others. Cheers Andrew

    Series 3 Parabolic Problems

I'm up to rolling chassis stage in my SWB S3 restoration. I have got GME parabolics mounted front and rear. Standard Rover diff at front. ENV diff at rear. Standard 2.25 engine and box. When I bought it, the car had been a farm wagon for about 20 years and had been severely abused. Lots of...

Series 3 Transfer Case - Intermediate Shaft Endfloat

Hi All Rebuilding transfer case and hit a snag. With no shim, just the thrust washers, I get about 9 thou of endfloat. With my thinnest shim (6 thou) in place as well, I get 3 thou. Anyone got any advice - shim in or shim out? Is it critical? Thanks very much Andrew Palmer

    Series 3 Intermediate gear shaft

I am looking for new roller bearings for my intermediate gear (LR part no. 599869). I have managed to source all of the other bearings for the transfer case from my local bearing supplier so I have ended up with quality Japanese or USA products instead of the Britpart rubbish. Trouble is, I...

Series 3 How worn is worn? Zenith Carburettor

Pulled my 36IV to bits last night. The main choke spindle is pretty worn at its inboard end. The bush it sits in is blind so no air can get past, but I was wondering if wear of this magnitude indicates replacement. Of course, only the throttle spindle is included in the rebuild kit, not the...

Series 3 S3 Seats (Britpart) how best to mount them.

I put the gearbox rebuild to one side over the weekend and had a look at the seats I've bought. These are the Britpart Deluxe seat set with the headrests on the driver & passenger seats. The mounting at the bottom of each side of the seat backs appears to be a captive 1/4" UNF nut in a metal...

    Series 3 Mainshaft Endfloat

Hi all. Onto the gearbox rebuild now in my 1976 S3 with suffix B box. I have reassembled it all, and mated it with the bellhousing. Now at this point the manual says "check that the mainshaft and layshaft rotate freely with minimal endfloat. The layshaft is fine. Once I tightened up the...

    2.25 Petrol cam timing

The S3 engine rebuild continues. I have assembled the crank gear and cam gear. Both only have one keyway, so there's no adjustment apart from tooth by tooth on the cam gear. I set cylinder No. 1 to TDC using a temporary install of the crank pulley and the timing pointers, whipped off the...

    Con rod nuts

Rebuilding 1976 S3 engine. Installed pistons and was about to reuse the old con rod nuts when I saw in the manual that they say to use NEW ones (their emphasis - so probably worth taking note of!). The ones I took out were Nylocs, perhaps a little taller (more thread) than ordinary Nylocs...

    Rocker Shaft end plugs

Stripped my rocker shaft out, unsurprisingly found huge wear under each rocker. Ordered new shaft and new bushes. The following day I realised that there are two little plugs in the end of the shaft itself, which do NOT come with the new shaft! Doh! And they only cost about 25p each! Doh...

Series 3 Correct type of air filter

When I got my S3 it was fitted with a sort of home made air filter directly on top of the carburettor. I want to replace it with the correct type. It is a 1976, 2.25 petrol, NZ import. A web search for 1976 underbonnet shots yields photos of both the round paper filter in the cake tin housing...

    Series 3 Jack Stop

Been rebuilding front axle on my S3 shorty. PO have abused everything, so there are a lot of new parts going in. In the parts book I found part number 90519206 which is described as a jack locator stop. Is this there just to help you put the jack in the right place and not damage the bottom...

Series 3 Front Half Shafts - Inner bearing and distance piece

Stripped down the front axle today and opened up some blue boxes of Land Rover loveliness, only to find that the Britpart swivel kit does not include the inner bearing, oil seal or distance piece! Damn, damn. More postage..... My half shafts (pictured) have some pitting and corrosion on the...

Series 3 109 Rear Brakes - Snail Cams

I'm reassembling my rear brakes (11" SLS) and find that the web of the shoe fouls the snail cam. I took the snail cams off when I had the backplates galvanised and I have a dreadful feeling that I have reassembled them incorrectly. In my current setup, working from the inside out, I have the...

Series 3 Brake back plates - Orientation

I am reassembling my rear axle on my 88" rebuild: ENV differential, (not sure how relevant that is, but there you are). 11" single leading shoe brakes (a PO had these on the back, with 10" on the front! I am fitting Heystee discs up front and leaving the 11" on the back, with a pressure...

Series 3 Steering relay - Brand new, but too stiff

Hi All I've just bought a N.O.S. relay for my S3 rebuild and having carefully installed it, find it is way too stiff. I can swing it around using a 500 mm lever, but using anything shorter is a real effort. Way more than the 12 lb I'm aiming for. The manual says if the action is too stiff...

Series 3 Series 3 Propshaft Lengths - How Critical?

Got my S3 88" propshafts down off the shelf at the weekend to clean them up and install new UJs, ready to go back on the vehicle at build time. Turns out that they are both the same length. Now the book says that the front one should be about 50 mm longer than the rear on a shortie like mine...

    Series 3 S3 Gearbox rebuild - How do I know what's buggered?

OK - Finally got both the boxes stripped and everything labelled in little zip lock bags. So far so good. Now the various manuals all say things like 'inspect and replace worn parts'. This is all very obvious when something is broken or in my case missing completely (synchro flat spring - fell...
