That was the original plan, but the more I looked at the rust the more daunting it seemed to take an angle grinder to it, I managed to produce some acceptable welds on nice clean shiny metal working on a bench, but figured that old rusty metal at different angles would be a different matter.

Well done, I had my outer sills replaced last year by a local radiator/welding co. (I chickened out after buying a welder). But if it fails again this year on welding i'm going to have a go myself.

Hi, Should the power steering pulley be able to spin freely with the belt off ? I struggled to get the pulley bolts off when removing them to do the P gasket, ended up using a blow torch and irwin bolt removers which I had to hammer on. 1995 300tdi.

Sorry, I should have mentioned it's a 300tdi, the ps pulley has to come off to get at the water pump bottom bolt.

Update: Managed to get the waterpump pulley and the belt tensioner off, but the power steering pulley bolts wont budge and are starting to round off.

Hi, My waterpump went the other day, so I ordered a new one plus a new P gasket, I read the threads on replacing the waterpump and they all say that the belt tension will hold the pulleys whilst undoing the bolts. I've tried this but the pulleys just spin ? Can anyone suggest the best way...
