    I've done it!

Your squealing sound might be the "serpentine belt" on the tensioner pulley. A 1p piece is all it will cost to fix. Lots of posts about this on this brilliant forum.

    Beer Tokens Available

Fair point but it's not just the boot floor. Shock absorber bushes, various bits of the steering gear and suspension, headlamp alignment, emissions - quite a big list. All fixable, but don't have time at the moment. At garage prices, would probably cost not far off £1k to get all the work done...

    Beer Tokens Available

Just failed MOT on corrosion plus a few other things and although it can probably be (eventually) fixed, haven't got the time at the moment. So ........ looking for a replacement. Have around £3k available. Have posted an ad on this site, and will obviously look at Ebay and Autotrader, but if...

    300 tdi Timing belt kit

Yes - but - the belt that's staring you in the face isn't the cam / timing belt - it's the 'serpentine' belt (a.k.a. fan belt) which isn't hidden away inside the engine !

    300tdi Serpintine Tensioner....

Shocker has a point but ............... now it's broke, there's no tension on the remaining bit of "stud" that's left in the hole and not likely to be any rust or corrosion, so smallish hole and smallish stud extractor should work OK. Worked for me !!

    300tdi Serpintine Tensioner....

I had the same problem - went round a corner and suddenly lost the power steering and a very nasty banging noise from under the bonnet - brown trousers time !! Easily fixed with a stud remover (see above posts) but had to remove radiator to get a drill to the sheared off stud. If you have a...

    squeeking fanbelt help please

As above. BEFORE doing anything else, try the "penny trick". It will take 10 minutes, cost what it says on the tin (1p) and as likely as not, will solve the problem. Worked for me.

    Mystery fan in dash

Not sure about Discos - mine hasn't got a fan but ........... I also have an X Type Jaguar (Mondeo with a posh badge) and this has a small fan behind a little grille on the dash which is something to do with the climate control - it blows air across the temperature sensor to get an accurate...

    Off side headlight inoperative

Might be a long-shot, but have you looked at the "Dim/Dip" unit ? The way it works seems to depend on the model year, but as there is a relay involved, it's quite possible for it to go wrong !

    Box of Budgies

Considered the cheap option by using a washer, but then decided to go the distance and do the job properly. I can report that the insertion of a one penny piece between the tensioner assembly and the engine block has totally cured the problem. Took five minutes to do. Worth the expense and...

    Box of Budgies

Ditto as Bluestrobe. Many thanks. I'll report back once the job is done. Just got to persuade the wife that the additional expense is justified !!

    Box of Budgies

Thanks for the replies. Just to be clear ........... I need to loosen the whole tensioner assembly and trap a thin washer or one-penny piece between the block and the tensioner assembly at roughly the "nine o'clock" position ? If it works, they will stop singing Nessun Dorma everytime I drive...

    Box of Budgies

The front of my engine sounds like a very loud box of budgies. Have tried sprinkling a load of "trill" over the serpentine belt, but that hasn't solved the problem. Its very difficult to hear exactly where its coming from - tensioner, water pump, alternator or just the belt. Have read through...

    Belt Advice please

Thanks for that - I thought those numbers were probably correct, but Paddocks list several others some of which seem to depend on VIN numbers and some which don't. Yes - they ARE flat belts - I just haven't adjusted to the proper modern vocabulary yet. Serpentine is a big pond in London as far...

    Belt Advice please

Hi All, Got a Discovery 300tdi. Vin no : -----TA171823. I want to replace both "vee belts" but am confused about which ones I need. There's a big one which does Crankshaft, Alternator, Water Pump, Fan and Steering Pump, and a second smaller width for the Air Con. Could anyone give me the correct...

    Brain Teaser

Recently bought a Discovery TDi 1996 and although this isn't a problem, I would be grateful for any opinions on what it might be ............. Some previous owner has made two electrical modifications which may, or may not, be related. A new wire has been run directly from the ignition switch...

Hello, Thanks, and ...... Heeeelp !

Hi everyone. Recently bought a 1996 Discovery to get us through the country lanes now we have moved to deepest Devon. So - first of all many thanks for all the help and advice available on this forum which helped me find a Discovery which is, i think, pretty good for age and mileage. Of course...
