you said it didn't matter if the car was in gear or not, was the car rolling when you tried this? If so probably the transfer case, if not rolling and in neutral there are no moving parts in the transfer case to make this noise, possibly a clutch problem

in my case the gas converter has two water hoses to it, normally taken from the heater hoses. This stops it freezing up, check these out for leaks/loose connections

if you lay under the car to the front and look back over the top of the transfer case with a good light you can just see and feel the linkage adjuster, it's a little fiddly, sorry can't remember what size the nuts were though could also get someone to move the shifter to make it easier to locate
