I finally got round to doing the checks and all inputs are good so it looks like the ecu is goosed! :( I'm kind of relieved in a way as I'll get one off a well known auction site and hopefully it will sort it. I'd rather this than a possible loom fault. Many thanks again sierrafery.

I've done this but the manual is incorrect, it's impossible to remove the heater controls without risking breaking something! Plan B I reckon.

I'm trying to diagnose the AC on my '97 tdi and the switch does not illuminate when I press the button, can the bulb in the switch be replaced? The switch does operate as I get slight increase in engine speed and hear fans engage so know switch is working. Thanks
