Potential new Series 2a owner with questions on powerplant and drivetrain

I must admit I was leaning towards the idea of a 19J, at least it would look like it had always been there, but most seem to be knackered now and need expensive rebuilds which sort of put me off a bit along with future parts availability potentially being poor due to their bad reputation. There...

Potential new Series 2a owner with questions on powerplant and drivetrain

I have a 2 1/4 Diesel which is happiest even with over drive and 7.50 tyres at 45 to 50, but lacks power so I have been thinking of a 300 TDi simply because they are more readily available and I had one in my disco, I am put off rushing out and buying one because of this apparent NVH issue. I...

Potential new Series 2a owner with questions on powerplant and drivetrain

Sorry to jump on your thread, and I know everyone has an opinion but I need to ask this question, Why is a TDi seemingly quite acceptable in a Defender but too noisy and harsh to use in a Series? Is a Defender so radically different from a series in construction? It is something that puzzles me...

    Recommissioning Boanerges, a Series 3

Thanks for your kind words Steve. However, its not been plain sailing, I've had the engine out since he hit the road and had to replace a pair of (brand new!) brake shoes due to severe oil leaks and I am currently awaiting the return of the injector pump from Diesel Bob ( a great guy and local...

    Recommissioning Boanerges, a Series 3

I have not posted for a few months, but I have been working away on Boanerges' return to roadworthy status .At the point I realised that the wiring loom was a disaster area an order was placed with Autosparks for a replacement...

    Recommissioning Boanerges, a Series 3

Hi Everyone The problem with the locking pin not going fully down was in fact a bit of rust on the red lever rod which goes into the front output shaft housing. I cleaned it up with wd 40 and some emery tape and it all now works. I have also got the brakes bled and a reasonable "pedal" which I...

    Recommissioning Boanerges, a Series 3

Hi Everyone I have searched for the answers to these questions and perhaps I'm asking the wrong questions of Google , if so forgive me and please point me in the right direction. The issue I'm having on my recently purchased series 3 is that its stuck in 4 wheel drive. My understanding of the...

    10 year plus cold start

Hi Every one I got a new battery for Boanerges today and after cleaning the terminals and gingerly applying voltage to the electrics for the first time in at least 10 years I turned the key to see what happened......... not a lot, I got an oil light and a charging light. Now I expected a yellow...

    Recommissioning Boanerges, a Series 3

Hello Everyone Welcome to my story about the recommissioning of Boanerges my newly purchased 88inch Series 3 2 ¼ Diesel. My intention is to have a good useable Land Rover, what it will never be is a highly polished show vehicle, I want to use and enjoy it. However the body work is very good...

    Series 3 Another Dreamer ?

Hi Everyone So delivery was arranged and happened on Wednesday, I have been lucky enough to have been given permission by my boss to initially have the Landy, or Boanerges as he has been named, at work, so very near my tool box :). I am sure that this happy state of affairs will not last forever...

    Series 3 Another Dreamer ?

Hi Guys Thanks for all your positive and honest replies I really appreciate that. Firstly I am not new to old cars and car restorations, I have been involved with Riley RMs since the mid 70s when my Dad and I rebuilt the first one that we owned. I actually think that you under estimate the the...

    Series 3 Another Dreamer ?

Many Thanks Steve for your welcome. Reading the story about your Landy has been part of my research before looking for a Series 3. Back story is that I was looking, but not very hard, for a Series 3 needing a bit of work to get mobile and then run and enjoy during the summer and improve over the...

    Series 3 Another Dreamer ?

Thats true..... but to be fair the previous owner cut the toe board out to weld in a new one, which is still in the back, and the bit higher up because it was rotten and then bought a steam engine and ran out of time. I guess it was the same deal with the front brakes. David

    Series 3 Another Dreamer ?

Hi Everyone I just thought I would post up some photos of the new project that I have recently bought. I think overall, considering it has sat where it is since its last MOT ran out, its in quite good nick, the good bits are really good and the bad bits awful.......... The bad bits include...

Other what have u done on ur disco today

Mine has run with a solid aluminium plate between the EGR valve and the flex tube leading to the top boost pipe. No gasses can pass but everything is there and coupled up so it looks like its fully working. I suspect that the broken wire on the temp sensor on top of the head will stop the valve...
